FOOTBALL.

HAMILTON RI'GBY UNION

SUBURBS v. NO. 1

The second practice match of the seas m uader the auspices of the Hamilton Rugby Union, was played on Sydney Square on Saturday afternoon, when the senior representatives of the No. 1 and Suburbs Clubs met. Greit interest was taken in the game, and th< re was a good attendance of the public, which was, no doubt, partly attributable to the fact that Geo. Gillett was taking part in the game, and the desire of the football enthusiasts to sea one of the famous " All Black " team playing. The game was a most interesting one to watch, being very fast, and if the games, when the season formuiiy open? next Saturday, prove as interesting, the attoiiuance of the public should gruatly increase. Some of the men, in fact, mo-t of them, appeared to be in good form, but there was a great deal too much off-side play, some of the Suburbs men making themselves particularly conspicuous in that respect, the ball being played by soinj of the men when they were fully 10 yards ofr-sidc. which is the height of foolishness, and they will Lave to be taught better, or they will be getting their teams into trouble in au awkward moment in a Cup fixture. Both clubs had fairly strong sides in the field, while Suburbs were assisted by G. Gillett and F. Coates neither of whom will be at the service of the club again. The play throughout was of a very even nature, and neither *ide had its lines crossed, the only score being a drup kick from play by Gillett, obtained during the first half. Gillett also had au attempt at goal from a free kick from a very difficult unglo in the lirst half, tho ball just going ouUido tho post. For No. 1, Clark, at full, played a splendid game, his kicking being very good. Uughes also played a good game, as did while the forwards all played well together. Of the Suburbs backs, Gillett was, of course, the star, and his magnificent kicking, his passing, and stopping of forwird rushes, drew rounds of applause from the spectators. Prince was in good form, and Castleton also proved his worth. Or thv forwards, Callaghan, D n y and Coates were the pick. Mr H. Johnson controlled the game, while Messrs Windsor aud Tuck acted as linesmen. ;
