AUSTRALIA AND IMMIGRATION.

MELBOURNE, January 31. MrDeakiu, speaking, at a luncheon, on the necessity of increased immigration to develop the country, said the Commonwealth and the States in this matter must be closely and in« timatelv associated. If the States would make the land easily available to satisfy the inflow of immigration, and come to some agreement iu regard to the manner in which they would compete for immigration, the Federal Government were prepared to submit a bill next session and ask Parliament to vote liberal subsidies to advertise Australia in England and bring out suitable immigrants at cheap fares, thus competing with Canada. The Government was also preparing a scheme of bounties to encourage new products. The conquest of the great interior at present practically unoccupied, was a great national question. The Federal Government had made the States this practical oiler, hopiug that it would lead to practical busiuess.

LONDON, January 31. The St. James Pall Mall Gazette's comment on Mr Deakin's immigration proposals is that they are a healthy sign of prudence and foresight and hopes that it will place tha immigration question of Australia on a sound working basis.
