(By Telegraph,—Press Ass >ciation.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. It is understood that Mr Gardner, Government valuer, of Palmerston North, has been offered the position of deputy valuer general. It is definitely decided that Mr R. Goring Thomas, deputy registrar of the Supreme Court at Auckland, is to succeed Mr H. C. Brewer as registrar of the Court in that city. DUNEDIN, Last Night. Mr John McNeil, a member of the Provincial Council, iirst chairman of Clutha County Council, and first Mayor of Balclutha, isdead at 69. Deceased arrived in Otago in 1849. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Fines amounting to jC7S, with costs £8 10s, were imposed this morniDg on three ChiDamen for having opium on their premises. The fines were promptly paid. WELLINGTON, Last Night. A carpenter named Henry Spencer, a single man, employed by the City Corporation, was knocked down by an electric car at the Courtenay - place crossing, but escaped fatal injuries by the speedy application of the brakes and life-saving apparatus attached to the front of the car. He suffered rather severe injuries to his head.
