Samuel Pierce, the cab-driver arrested by the direction of the Coroner at the conclusion of an inquest held on the 15th instant, respecting the death of a young woman named Minnie Hope, was brought up at' the Police Court this morning and re-, manded. The verdict at the inquest was that the woman met her death from falling from Pierce's cab. At the Police Court this morning, Mr Northcroft proceeded with the hearing of a charge of assault anii robbery preferred against three young.men, Michael O'Brien, George Murphy, and Robert Martin, by an elderly man named John Watson,. The accused were committed for trial. The steamer Tasmania passed Russell bound for Auckland at three o'clock, and is expected to arrive at one to-morrow morniug. ' The VVaihora leaving Auckland today has been instructed to search the neighbourhood of the North Cape and the Three Kings for the Wairarapa, which left Sydney on Wednesday last and has not yet arrived. If she does not find any trace. of her there she is to take a northerly course as far as latitude 34*20 degrees South, and longitude il6 '6 East, where she will meet the Wakatipu. In the meantime the latter will search.southward of the usual route between New Zealand and the appointed rendezous. The opinion of the captains of the Union Company is, if the Wairarapa has broken down the prevailing current will set her north-east of the usual course. Possibly the Duke" of Sutherland picked up the disabled vessel.- She left Townsville on Saturday for Lyttelton, where she was due yesterday. ; It is calculated 1 'she would cross the Wairarapa's course oh Friday night. The Tasmania is due in Auckland to-morrow morning, and the Hauroto in Wellington from Sydney. If they bring ho tidings the company will probably despatch the Corinna in search of the missing boat.
