RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usnal'qn-irtrrly meeting of the Raglan County Council was held at Ngarnaw.diia mi Wednesday, and was continued on Thursday and yentordny. There were present: Crs. G. 8. Whiteside (chairman), J. McDonald moved that the Council take the necessary stops by special order to give effect to the petition from the Knrioi ratopayeis, asking that their holdings be incorporate! with the Waingan: riding-Seconded by the Chairman.—Gr. Cogswell raised several objections against tlio petition, and the Chairman ruled the petition was not in order, and it was consequently thrown out.-The Chairman then moved'a similar motion, that the petitioners holdings in the Awawa and Onewhero Survey Districts lie united to the Onewhero | Riding.-This motion was considered by several (imincillorsto.be on all fours with Cr, McDonald's motion, but tho Chairman ruled against.—Snmn discussion ensued, and the matter was eventually dropped, ; OKDINARY MEETING.' Commission.—Tho Engineer's salary was fixed at £1 Is per day when asked by the Council to report on any work to be undertaken, and on work under his supervision tho commission is to lie Ih, per cent, on sums up to £IOO, and 5 per cent, for amounts over that. Tlllltns,-Colonel Dawson, owner of sections 133,131 and 135, Parish of Waingar ■, write, saying he understood that a sum of money was standing to tho credit of thirds, and he requested that it bo expended in forming roads as shown on tho plan. Ho offered to advance £25, to be repaid out of this fund,—The advance was declined, and the matter left in tho hinds of the Thirds Committee. Aoci'tONßKß.—The County of Raglan has besn gazetted a spatial licensing district, and Mr A. R. Langlny has been granted a license for nine months for £7los. Missing Books, Eto,-A long discussion ensued upon the defalcations and non-delivery of cortain books by the late clerk, and it was resolved •" That tho chairman be empowered to take action, criminal or civil, and to employ Mr Lewis O'Neill, solicitor, to compel tho late clerk tn return the bioks of the Council, and also to make good the defalcations which have lately been discovered."—Considerablo dissatisfaction was expressed at the contemptuous manner in' which tlio Council were being troated. Bridgb Appboaoh.—Mr P. Iwersen, of Whatawhala, wrote asking that tho road leading up tn tho Whatawliata bridge bo made up.—lt was resolved to reply that the matter wan outside the jurisdiction of the Council, a"d to refer him to the Waipa County Council. Expenditure,-Mr W, Arch, Murray again wroto requesting payment of an account which hail been before tho Council at previous meetings -It was resolved to adhere to their previous decision —not to pay for unauthorised work. Raglan WiiAitF.-On March 13th the Northern Stoamship Company's Gairloch carried away a pile at the Raglan wharf. Tho pile and necessary labour to replace it was valued at £ls.—ln answer to a letter the company replied that in consequence of tlio weather beins bad at the time it was in't their fault! therefore, would tho Council accept £lO as full settlement with the free carriage of a new pile.—This offer Wiis acoopted, and the amount has been p,vd. , ,• Pkiiry Kkseiivr.-Mi' Lowis ONeill, solicitor, of Hamilton, was of the opinion th it a 11 years' lease for the Ferry Reserve at Ngarnawahia would be legal if the ferry was under the control of the Council when the reserve was gazetted.—This was so. Lf.asks.-Mi' E. Lake. M.H.R., is to bo asked to onquiro why the Crown grants of the harbour endowments in Raglan are at variance with the surveyed plan. T.\Noi,n.-In ISSO certain sections of land in Kiglan were wild, Messrs Wilson by the Itaelanand Highway Board (since merged in the Council) for non-piyment of rates.— The land now turns out to be Crown hinds and Messrs Wilson aik a refund of their money,—Mr Lake is to be asked to see into the matter.

Shamming.—An account for £llss was receivod from MrO. Mayos, Auckland. On particulars bsing asked for, it turned out to bo for searching titles of properties and the amount increased to £2-The account was left with the Finance Committee.

itKSRItVK3.-The matter of applying for cemetery and school sites in Waingaro Riding was left with Or, McD 'iiald. Twites.—Application is to bo made to the Commissioner of Taxes for a list showing amounts paid and arrears in rents of perpetual lenses, with a view to tho distribution of thirds. UsctAIMKU Lands.—Application is to bo mule to tho Public Trustee to place certain lands under the Unclaimed Lands Act, 1893, fur non-payment of rates, and n first instalment is to bo sent uway nt once.

Drain On Road.—Messrs James Ik «., R, Rathbnrne, and Webb wrote, requeuing that a bridge leading owra drain across tho road to thoir pr iperties be replaced by a culvert.-Ur. McDonald was requested to inspect and do any necessary work. Contracts.—Extensions of time, owing to wet weather, were granted, Messrs Loan and Collins, P. M. La Trobo, and A, Collins, as for their applications. Waingaho.— A lorn? discussion ensued upon the crossing, of tho Waingaro stream. It was spoken of as a most dangerous one, The sum of £35 was voted in May, 1892, for the erection of a bridge on this river. Grant.—The spending of .a grant from tho Government of £IOO on mads leading to the Tuakau Spocial Settlement was left in

the hands of the Chairman. Dob RKoiSTUAn.—It was. decided to instinct the Dog Registrar to enforce the law with regard to the registration of dogs. Latb Hon. BALr,ANOB.-A letter of condolence was ordered to be sent to Mm Balance sympathising with her in her afllcthm and regretting the lamentablo deatli of Imhusband.—Or. Brooks spoke in a very high manner of the deceased gentleman's character, lie having beon an old friend of his. Verandah.—Permission was granted :Ur h% Rendell to erect a verandah across the footpath in'-Cliff-street, from Mr May's shop, provided it was not an obstruction, \\MS\ii BiuDGB.-Mr S. Vercoo wrote saying Ids horse had fallen through the Wainui bridge and asked that the bridge be re-decked.—This it was decidod to do and the engineer was giveu instructions to go on with tho work. . Dkbeniubk.-Tlib Bank of Now Zealand wrote asking cheque for £33 for debentures to May 1893, issued under Road* and Bridges Construction Act, 1882, and also asking that those of 1891 and 1892 be paid. —These havo since been paid. Vote of Thanks.-A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman for the great interest ho had taken in procuring work in Ins district for distressed natives, through the effects of the late floods. Ruqi'KS'r.-Mr George Smith, of Karamu, asked that a bridge be erected over the Kaniwhiwha crook, in order to give him an outlet to his property. The estimated cost (£150) was considered too heavy, and bomg on private property, tho request was not Bl ]tOAD.-MrW. A. Murray's application that a certain small length of road ho opened up to replace the present road, which is unsuitable to build a bridge upon, will be granted, provided ho undertakes the whole cost, as In similar cases.
