THOSE "BLOOMING" CAPS.
'Twas on the third flay of September. eighteen hundred and ninnty-two, There sallied 'ortli from Hamilton a welltried doughty crew To wage decisive battle with foemen bold and strong, And wrest from them those " blooming caps, the subject of my song. Theirdapper captain, Hammond, out all his war paint on, And Bertie ever on the ball and burly Harrison, And Jolly Frank and Odium straight and sturdy Gribble too. Were all intent the Huntly boys should find their Waterloo. And Williamson and Cassidy, Smart, Copan, Peacock bold, With stalwart Seddon, speedy Wright, the Gilletts tried of old, Were all in deadly earnest thoso " blooming " caps to bag. That victory should as of yore again perch on their flig. And thus unto the battle gionn I they sally all away. Soon arc they in the thick of light—the first spell of the play ; With Huntly rushing down the wind while fierce the struggle grew, Maroons eiate deem viel'ry sure, they've scored nine points to two.
Bs not too sure, oh bold morions, ye hardly know the blues, Whose power to stay, whose pjrit and vim .shino must when most they lose ; Your banquets' ready and yonr band, but look ont for mishaps, The second spell is yet to be—Ah me ! those " blooming" caps.
Ah, me ! those " blooming " caps, maroons, you'll never, never wear, Yon cannot stand against the blues as down on you they bear ; They're on their mettle now, maroons, and going for you straight, So straight that when the spell is o'er, you're nought and they've scored eight. Tis fortune do la guerre, maroons, and victory's not for you, You must, as yon have done before, strike to the boys in blue ; " The best laid schemes of mice ami men You know the rest, perhaps, Ii so, it sing your song, you can't—you've lost those " blooming" caps. Just read on while 1 moralise a little for your good, Ye bold maroons ne'er halloa till your safely from tlu wood ; Ye gallant blues remember life's like a football fray, And only those come uppermost who've grit and power to stay. <; LKANKIi.
