At a special meeting of the Chamber jf Commorca to-day, the following resolution was carried, nem. con., viz:—"This Chamber is 'Jnabla to find any justification for the proposal of again bringing the New Zealand railways under political control and is of opinion that the management under the (Jommissioner.s has been highly satisfactory to tho colony as a wholn and iiistifics the continuation of the non political management." MrT. Kennedy McDonald spoke strongly against the resolution and supported the proposal of tho Minister for Public Works. Ho was the only member who protested against the resolution. The Government offer a reward of £200 for the identification of the gun found at the scene of the Lira Gorge nmrden James Head was drowned in the Oruru river last evening. In the Supr.'.me Court, Herbert Wilfred ; Lawson, with several aliases, who was arrested in the Waikato district under the name of Gifford, was indictod or. a charge of obtaining £7 from John Floctnn, of Wellington, by falsely representing himself to be a son of Sir Wilfred Lawson, temperance advocate. After an absence of two hours, the jary returned a verlict of guilty, and he was sentenced to two years' imprisonment.
