S. MARK'S, TE AROHA.

Annual Meeting of Parishioners. The annual meeting of S. Mark's (Chnrch of England) congregation was held in the church on Wednesday evening, the Rev. J. Marshall, resident minister, occupying the chair. Considering the importance of the business to be transacted, the attendance was less numerous thau might have been expected. In his opening remarks the rev. chairman said he would have been glad to see a larger meeting. He feared that some members seemed to forget that if the church business was to be successfully carried on it must be conducted on ordinary business principles, but he hoped they would come to see the matter in this light, and that at each succeeding annual meeting there would be a fuller attendance and a corresponding increase of interests shown in church matters. It was resolved that the vestry consist of five members, together with the churchwardens ; and Messrs Heathcote, Marsden, Emerson, Dobuon and Pyne were elected vestrymen. Contributions were voted to the Home Mission Fund, £2 ; to the Melanesion Mission, £1; and to the fund for the assistance of aged clergymen, £1. A resolution was passed "That tenders be called for fencing in the church grounds, and. that the vestry be empowered to have the work carried out, at a cost not exceeding £35." The question of procuring a suitable liarmo nium for the Church was next considered, and during the discussion a member intimated that an offer had been made of an excellent instrument, for the sum of £50, with a lengthened period for payment. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of Mr G. A. Burgess to make enquiry as to its suitability, and to purchase if approved of. With reference to the four sections of ground adjoining the domain, and which, at this laying out of the township had been reserved for a parsonage site, it was resolved to retain possession of the whole on the conditions proposed at the conference, between the Warden and native owners held some weeks ago, viz., the usual annual rent of £4 per acre. The treasurer stated that arra?igements were in progress for the purchase of a bell for the church, and that he believed a suitable one would shortly be procured. During the proceedings, grateful reference was made by the chairman and others, to the eminent services rendered to the congregation by Mr Burgess. Before the conclusion of the business, votes of thanks were unanimously passed to Hi.s Lordship Bishop Cowie, for his successful efforts in procuring the freehold of the church grounds ; to Miss Newby for her exertions in getting up the amateur enterment in aid of the church on New Year's Eve; and to Miss McClatchey for her valuable services as organist.
