Tk Aroha. Wednesday. Percy Cook alias R. D. Percy, the individual who passed the valueless cheques on Mr R. S. Brown, of the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Moninsville, was brought before Messrs Roche and Hunt, J.P., on Saturday, and was sentenced to .siv months' imprisonment with hard labour in Mount Eden Gaol. He was again arrainged on a similar charge befoie Mr Kenrick, R.M., yesteiday, and received threo months, the sentence to hi concurrent with the first one. A third offence of the same kind, committed at the Star Hotel, Kihikihi, has yet to be answered for by the prisoner, but the case will be dealt with elsewhere. There were only two civil cases heard in court. E. Hall v. G. M. Burke.— Claim, £1 for wages, and J. OBrien v. Jas. Roycroft. — Claim, £2 lOd, money given to defendant as deposit on land to be taken up for plaintiff at settlement, but which defendant had fuiled to get. In both casps judgment was given for plaintiffs, with costs. Sfc. Patrick's Day will pass over here without any of the demonstrations usual on the occasion. The races last week and the rejoicings at the opening of the railway have filled up our capacity for enjoyment, and to others is left the duty of doing honour to Ireland's Patrou Saint. Those of our townspeople who have not yet had pleasure enough will betake themselves to Paeroa, where a good day's racing is expected, if not spoiled by the weather, which at pi esent looks rather threatening.
