The Kihikihi Races.

[BY TELEGRAPH — OWN REPORTER.] Kihikihi, Wednesday. The annual races were held in Andersons paddock to-day. The morning' was threatening, but toward* mid-day it allowed for fine weather. The attendance, however, was not as good as it would have been had there been no other attractions elsewhere. The horticultural show at Cambridge was a strong counter attraction, tunny people ha\ing pone there who would otherwiie have attended here. The airangements carried out by the stewards were good. The huidle race after the first round resolved itself into a flat race, all the hurdles having been knocked down. Dick Hunt started a hot favourite, and the confidence of the public was not misplaced, as he won by about two lengths from Albion. Tho following is the programme :~i Handicap Hurdles, of 15 3 ovd. Painamau .. 1 Black Nigger 2 Napier . . 3 After this race the Steeplechase, the e\ent of the day, came off. The distance was about 2\ miles, over some really good jumps. The course was not by any means a level one, and showed the staying poweis of the horses. As the weights were welter weight for age, each horse had a steadier on him. Steeplechase of 15soys. Distance, about 2V miles ; welter weight for age. Maidens aflowed lOlbs. Entrance, l£sovs. There were six entries for this event, which was won by that wonderful little horse Jonathan, Albion second, Clover third. Jonathan is a wonderful jumper. He is a little horse, and had the steadier of list olbs on him. It was sheer good jumping that won this race, for his rider was anything but a good one. There were eleven stiff jumps, among which was a water jump. The last was a stiff iune fence, quite five feet high. Jonathan baulked at it, but that was not his fault. Next time he got over it with a run of fifty yards. Albion's jockey. Charles Weal, came to grief at the second jump and lost a great deal of ground, but he pulled it up and came in a good second however. The rest tailed in anyhow. Kihikihi Cup Hvndicyp of 25sov&. Distance, two miles. Nomination, lsov.; acceptance, l ! ,so\s. Mr R. Brown's" eh h Kenil worth, aged, J)>t7lbs ... . . 1 Mr Kind's b q Dick Hunt, aged, 9st 71bs 2 Panirua (B,t) and StanW (7»t 7H>>) also ran, but were imwhoie. The best bit of horsemanship 1 have seen for a long time was exhibited in this race by Dick Hunt's rider. The saddle was, Maori like, loosely ghthed, and dining the race turned round, but notwithstanding this trifle the jockey, a Maori lad, kept his seat on his horse's back and kept a hold of the flap of the saddle, keeping it from getting amongst Dick's legs. Kenilworth won, haid held. Pony Race of Ssovs. Distance, 1 mile. Five entries. Mr Baxter's Kotiro, !H. 71bs. . . 1 Mr Hettit's Black Nigger, 14 hands lin., IW 2 Selling Hack Race of 7sovs. Distance, 1 mile. Weight, 10->t. Winner to be sold for £10, surplus to go to the funds. Mr Ba\tei's Kotiro won this, and was sold for £12 10s. The next was for a stock whip, presented by Mr Henderson. This was won by Mr Thompson's Faugh-a-Ballagh. The Consolation Handicap of Ssovs, 1 mile, was won by Albion. Some excitement was caused by seeing two native houses over the Puniu in flames. S'ime natives quarrelled amoug themselves, and one in revenge set fire to the whare of the other. This was the first. The ofchei was a good weather-boaid house. Some ay it was set fire to by the owner himself, because he saw his other whare burned.
