TE AROHA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Te Aroha, Monday.

Axoihkk sop to Ceiberus, fur as such may be regarded the pittance doled out, evidently with a giud/e, by the Pinko County Council sit their iccent meeting for street improvements in this tnvnship. L-irge sums aro voted without a murmur for the making of londs of doubtful utility in another locality, the only persons likely to be much benefited thereby being ceitain battery owners, but for works upon which tho well-being of this community largely depends money cm only be obtained by persistent elamoin ing, and then only in driblets. The amount to be expended, £%">, and which must not bo exceeded, is quite inadequate to complete the required improvements, if they are to be aimed out in a proper manner, and the parsimony displayed by the council in this m.itter is all the move reprehensible, as tho streets for the repair of which the money is icquired arc in reality main county road 4, over whicli there is continuous and increasing traffic. Ciedit is due, however, to at least two of the councillors, who are evidently desirous of teeing justice done to thr re*identf here, and who, it is hoped, will, ere long, have an opportunity of diveiting a poition of some other unexpended grant for works elsewhere to complete what has been so tardily begun, and is so urgently needed in this neighbourhood. But the sum that has been voted, small though it be, will come most opportunely, us, owing to the stoppage of woik at the mines, a considerable number of men are at present out of employment, and it is likely the council will have the satisfaction of getting the work done at a cheaper rate than if it had been taken in hand some months ago. The sporting spirit is being kept alive among thu»o of racing proclivities here. Another match came off last Saturday afternoon between Mr Frazers horse Tin Tacks and Mr Hetherinjjton's ware Little Nell, the stakes being JL'5 a-side, and the distance half-a-mile. On this occasion Tin Tacks showed to greater advantage than in his I>erfonnauce on the Saturday ptevious, and came in a winner with comparative ease. One or two other matches are spoken of, to be run sometime this week, and the sport 13 likely to be kept tip until the regular meeting of the lacing olub, whioh will take place on tho 12th of next month. Nominations for the licensing committee will be received by the returning officer at the court-house between the hours of 10 and 12 to-day. The names of the candidates likely to be proposed are those of men of moderate views, but the matter has so far received \ery little attention and the election will probably passover without exciting much interest. Our evenings are now to be enlivened by the inspiriting strain* of the Aroha brass band, wliioh has recently been resuscitated and niade its first appearance in a performance in the domain on Friday evening last. The night being beautifully fine a large number of persons were present on the grounds and were pleasurably surprised by the ci editable manner in which the vatious j piece* were rendered. It is the present intention to have a performance in the same place two evenings a week while tho tine weather lasts, and as the members of the /•and have spent a large amount of time in practising it is hoped the community will extend to them that amount of encouragement and assistance which they so well deserve. The cheap exclusion by train to Auckland on Friday last was not taken advantage of by many persons from this quarter, the early hour at which it was necessary to start from here and the night journey back by coach from Morrin^yille deterring a number a number from joining in the trip. Besides, it h expected that as soon as the line i* openod to thin station the promise of the Public Works Minister will be fulfilled and facilities offered for making an occasional cheap trip from thia end, This was the
