BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.

A l\rcsk congregation assembled at S. Andiew's Church, Oambudge, on Sunday morning to hear the addie^ of the liev. W. G. Baker, as a deputation from tlio above society, upon the gi.mduor and extent of the labours of that body in pi (limiting 1 Christian knowledge tlnoughout the world. The reverend gentleman proceeded to deliver a very interesting discouise upon the woik of the society, fiom its inauguration down to the present time. He gave as an instance of the extent of this that about eighteen yeais ago an incredible pioportion of the population of London, Manchester, and other laige towns wcic without bibles, wheieas at the present day, thumgh the efforts of the society which had brought the co-^t of bibles and testaments down fiom so many pounds to so many pence, the cntne pool of these towns had them at then 1 disposal. Indeed, no less a sum than £26,000 had been spent by the poor of London in one ycai on bibles and testaments, which wab due to the action of the society. But not only had this good woik been experienced in England, but the bible having been tianslated into no less than 2*>o languages, it was possessed and lead in all coineis of the globe and by all nationalities. In one clay no less than 10,000 bibles have been issued. He instanced the good work which had been done m Egypt, Russia, India, China, Japan, and the uncivilised lauds of the Southern sea, almost every native of every land having now a bible to lead if he so desired. In the afternoon the Rev. Mi Baker, met the chikhen of the vaiious Sunday schools in the Public Hall, when the hall was filled. There weie a Luge number of adults piesent including the .Sunday school te.ichei.s. The platfoim was occupied by the piesideuts of the vaiious schools, Messis Biooks (Prcsbj-teuan), Saundei.s (Anglican), Monib (Baptist), and Hewitt (Wcbleyan), who assisted the speaker. After the singing of a few hymns and prayer the children weie tieated to a veiy lucid ani interesting discourse, the speakei taking great pains to leave nothing unexplained. The address was listened to with gieat attention by the clnldien. A collection in aid of the society was t iken up. The lev. gentleman addressed the congiegation of Tnnity Piesbytenan Church in the evening on the same subjects. A lecture will be deliveied in S. Andrew's school-room to-night upon "The Bible in India." The lecture will be illustrated and pi onuses to be highly niteiesting. All are invited, and we have no doubt the attendance will be a veiy laigo one. A collection will be made.
