WAIKATO COUNTY CO UN CIL

The ordinary monthly meeting of the cuiucil was held in the chambers, Hamilton Eas,t, yesterday. Present :— Capt. Steele (in the chair), Crs. Primrose, Graham, Johnson and llunciman. The Vacancy in the Council. —The Gh airman said he had seen some corres> pondence in The Waikato Tunes regarding an election of councillors for the Wdipa County Council. He presumed the argument employed would apply to this council. — Cr. Pi'Lim-O'se said he had carefully looked through the Act, and could find nothing that bore on the question.— The Clerk explained the course laid down in the \ct. — Some little difficulty had arisen on account of the recent division of the Cambridge ndiug into two, but he would now take steps to hold the election forthwith. The Su m- Bmu-> Nuisance.— Mr A. B. Wheellor, &ecretaiy of the Tamahere Fanners' Club, wrote forwarding resolution of the club re the destruction of .small birds, which hns already boen published.— Cr. Graham said theio was a professional birdcatcher in the district who was prepared to go around and catch the birds. He had made an offer to the Farmers' Club. Ho did not know what the cost would be. — Cr. Primrose said it was no use in writing to the road board, because they could not devote any of their revenue to destroy small birds. The county could deal with it by striking a special rate. — Cr. Graham said the subject had been brought forward at the club by several members, who had strong objections to the proposal for poisoning the bud*. — Cis. Runcunan and Prim-ro-e were of opinion it would be better to call for tenders for the destruction of the birds, rather than to entrust the work to one man. — After some discussion it was •agreed to write to the Fanners' Club, asking for fuither information regarding the cost of catching the birds, &c., and intimating that if they would suggest a feasible .scheme the council would bo prepared to strike a small rate. Unregistehed Dogs..— The Clerk reported that the sub-registrar of dogs, Rangiri, that there were two owners of unregistered dogs in the riding. These were Messrs R. R, Ralph and Samuel Smyth. He (the clerk) immediately took out summonses. Provision was however made in the Act that if a dog owner registered his animal before being summoned he would, notwithstanding the fact that all dog taxes should be paid by the Ist January, bo exempt from all law expenses. He had received a jocular letter from Mr Smyth informing him that the tax had been paid some days before the receipt of the summons 1 , though he knew it had been taken out before that time. The question in' his mind was whethor the action commenced with the taking out or with the receipt of the summons, and he intended to see the clerk of the court with a view to settling the point. — Several councillors complained of the existence of unregistered dogs in various parts of the county, and the clerk in answer to a question, why the amount of tax collected last year was so low, said a large number of people returned their dogs as cattle and sheep dogs. He knew of one dog so described which he had good reason to believe was a well-bred pointer. Count? Accounts.— The annual and half-yearly accounts of the county were read] having been duly audited and found oorrect, and were signed by the chairman. The Hamilton Tbaffic Bridge. — The Chairman s&id he had seen Mr Lake, the chairman of the Waipa County Council, on this matter. They were agreed that the counties ought to contribute toward the maintenance of the bridge, which was as much a convenience to the counties as it was to the borough. They thought, however, that the borough council should have consulted the county councils. They were of opinion that the borough should bear one-half the expense, and the counties the other.-— Several councillors agreed with this view. No resolution was come to on the matter. A" number of acconnts presented, were passed for payment, and the c/iun/pjl rose.
