Mr Whitaker Knighted. The Star to-night says :— " The cable this afternoon conveys the intelligence that the name of Mr Whitaker has been added to the roll of the Knights of St. Michael and St. George. Few persons will deny that the honour of Colonial Knighthood has been well bestowed on the ex-Premier. His iormer colleague in the leadeibhip df the old piovincial pai ty, Sir W. Fox, long ago received thib distinction, and their opponent, Sir E. W. Stafford, lias for many years reclined on his honour. Mr WhitaUer his had a longei tei m in the public service in a di&tinguibhed position under a responsible Government than any other colonial statesman, and the bestowal of thib honour, which has been confened on men \\ hose claims to itate not very clear, is only a tardy lecognition of his eminent services."
