WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.

This usual monthly meeting of the council was held at the ch.iinbei.>, Hamilton East, yesteiday. Present : Capt. Steelo (chairman), Crs. Pritniose, Johnston, Wells, Hewitt, Runoiman and Graham. Thk Victoria Road. — The chairman evplained that he had failed to .see Mr Bryce le the Victoiia Road. He however had a few word 1 - with the Minister f<>r Public Works, and had asked Mi .T, B. Whyte to interview Mr Mitchelson. He had not seen Mr Whyto bince. — The clerk read a letter from the Survey Office, intimating that the Government could not undertake the diamage of the Tauwhare lands, which were not suitable for defened payment sections, and had been handed over to the Lands Depaitment for cash bale.- -The chairman said Mr Whyte had seen the Minister since. He did not think the council should let the matter drop. If any piivate person were going to sell these lands, he would in the first instance drain them. — Cr. Kunciman s.ud if the Government did not dram the land some speculator would buy it, and wait until the county took off the water for him. It would mean that a county late must be le\ied. He was quite .sure the Tamaheie Road Boaid would not spend any money on the road. — Cr. Wells could not undei^fcand that the Government would allow the Victona load to fall into such disrepair, aftei ovei £1000 of piivate subset iption had been spent on it. The load wai of immense iinpoitance to the town and dihtiict of Cambridge, and the impiovenient of it would materially mciease the value of the land belonging to the Government. — The clerk said eveiy aigument had been used with the Government. — Cr. Wells thought the best com so to pur&ue was to leave the matter in the hands, of Mi Whyte, who stood a far bettei chance of getting what was requiied than the council. — After some fuither discussion, the matter was left in the hands of the channi.m to confer with the member for the district. Thk Nakkow*. Road.— The Tamahere Road Boaid wiote, asking the council to take over the Nauows road as a main road from the bridge to Eureka. It was pointed out that the Waipa County Council had taken over the continuation of the road on the west side of the river. — Cr. Wells said he was about to make a similar proposal in favour of the Victoiia load fioni Tauwhare to Cambiidge.— -Cr. Runcimau, in moving that the leyuest of the Tamaheie Road Boaid, and that of Cr. Wells be granted, pointed out that the roads woie stiictly county roads, and ought not to be .a buiden on the load boaid. — The motion was seconded by Cr. Primrose, and carried. Thk County Rvte.— A letter was read fiom the Cambridge Road Board, piaving the county not to levy a county rate, as the riding w as in funds. Saunokks' Road, Waerknga.— Cr. Johnston said Mr Wallace had closed the lbacT through his propeity, and he (Cr Johnston) had been obliged to spend about £13 to allow the settlers a temporary outlet by keying fascines on the swamp. There was still a difficulty in the matter. The council had given Mr ftaundeis £5 for the piivilege of crossing his property, but Mr Saundeis now said it was understood that they weie to use the old track. It would take £30 to make the swamp through Saunders passable. — It was agreed that a sum not exceedin" £20 be voted to put the road in repair. MviN Ro.vns, Rangihuu. — Or. Johnson said he was given to understand that there was a balance of £100 left out of the mam road loan. He proposed that this sum be spent on the main road between Rangiriri and Meremere. The road here was very bad. — It was resolved to call for tenders without specifying the sum to be expended, as it was expected that the exact amount of the balance in hand would be known by next meeting. — It was agreed to grant Mr Nicol an extension of siv weeks' time in which to complete his bridge contract at Rangiriri — It was agreed to make certain alterations in the Rangiriri bridges as recommended by the engineer. Notice of Motion Withdrawn.— Cr. Primrose, by permission, withdrew his motion for levying a county rate. Accounts. — Accounts amounting to £371 17s were passed for payment, and the council rose.
