A serious fire occurred last night at a convent at Belleville, Illinois, resulting in the destruction of the building and the death of twenty - seven nuns and pupils, who perished in the flames before issistance could reach them. Paris, January 7. The latest new s received from Madigascar announces that tlie Malagasies li.uo aecpted the ultimatum of the French commander, and agreed to cede to France the northern portion of Madagascar. Intelligence is to hand from Tonquin that the King of Annam has tendered his complete submission to France, and endorsed the treaty entered into with the French Commissioner by his predecessors. Alexandria, January 7. i The members of the Egyptian Ministry have tendered resignations to the Khedive. Cairo, January 7. It has transpired that the Khedive has agreed to the demand of the British Government regarding the Soudan, and has now definitely decided to withdiaw the troops therefrom, and to post a strong garrison, at the entrance to the Desert, in the neighboughood of the second cataract on the Nile. It is believed here that the Khedive will ultimately place the Government in the hands of a. Cabinet formed exclusively of British subjects. No official declaration has, however, yet been made, and the position of affairs in connection with the political ci isis is unchanged. Londox, January 7. The various Colonial Agents-General today waited upon the Duke of Buckingham, Chairman of the Executive Com- ! mission for the Colonial Exhibition, to be held in London, in 1886. His Grace took occasion to urge the colonies to take an immediate share in the exhibition of matters connected with health and sanitation, to be held in London this year ; I also to cable the amount of space they will require, and stated that the time I for the reception of exhibits had been extended, Sir P. Cunliffe Owen, who was present, urged that the attention of the public should be called to the colonial products by arranging for exhibitions of cooking and eatables. The Agents-General cordially acquiesced in the suggestions of the Duke and Sir Cunliffe Owen, as HUely to lead to results both useful ar.d beneficial to the colonies.
