KAWHIA.

Sudden Death. On the 20th ultimo, as an old native, who, I btlieye, belonged to the Ngatihuta tribe, was riding away from Mr Phillips' store, he was seen to chop off his horse as if dead. On inspection such proved to be the ca«e. He limit h.ive died while on horseback. Tho horbe was a very quiet one, and did not make any attempt to run away after his rider fell.

New Year's Sports. A committee has been organised to conduct Sports — equine, athletic and aquatic — which are to take plage here on New Year's ]}ay- The members of tho A.C. force are the principal mover* in the affair, and no doubt they will do their bet>t to bring matters to a successful iisme.

Improvements in Kawhia. Theie aie now four stores e\ihtont in our township. Several of the ofticeis of the A.C. force are haviug hoiiao^ elected, and a lilmiry-rooiu is about to be put up for the benefit of the resident*. A splendid redoubt has been built on the Puru. A large piece of land lias beon fenced in and dug over by the force and ih being u&ed by them as a vegetable garden.
