TEMPERA NCE ENTERTAINMENT AT CAMBRIDGE.
Perhaps the greatest success yet achieved from a musical point of view, by members of the Temperance cause in Cambridsre in entertaining; their friends and sympathisers was the entertainment given by them in the School Room, on Thursday evening last. Almost every seat in the room was occupied. The Chair was taken by the Rev Mr Evans. It is a remarkable fact that since this means of bringing people together at thehe cheap though enjoyable entertainments has been adopted, the members list haR been considerably augmented, and some of those who would otherwise never dream of signing the pledge have been induced, through these social gatherings, to come forward and do so. The programme on Wednesday evening last consisted of the opening chorus by the choir, after whioh "Pull for the Shore Sailor," was rendered by Mr Smerden, the choir taking the chorus. A paper whs then read by Mi^s Jennie Carnagheo, after which Mr Ripley enlightened the assembly with an elaborate discourse on Temperance. Miss A. Johnson followed with a song, the ohoir* assisting in the chorus ; and thin was followed by Mr Trewheellar's " Paddy Green,'' a comio melody. Mr Johnson who accompanied himself on the harmonium, rendered " Life is like a flowing river," and Miss Carry Nixon, a pupil of the day school delivered a most impressive reading. Mr Alford concluded the programme with an impromptu discourse on the effects of intemperance,in which many forcible examples were brought forward. The Company having sung the National Anthem, the entertainment wbs brought to a close.
