Auckland, Last Night.
There was a good deal of] excitement on the Exchange this morning' in consequence of the exhibition of specimens from the Success and Blackraore'a mines. The former ia a rich block of stone covered with leafy gold Shares rose to 7s but afterwards receded. A fire occurred at Ishumata, near Mangare, at 2 o'clock yesterday morning, by which two large wheat stacks and one of oaten hay were destroyed. The fire was discovered from Elliotts house by Mrs Elliott, who gave the alarm. The men employed on. the farm hastened over to the paddock where the stacks were standing, but were too late to extinguish the fire. A commencement to thrash had been made on the previous evening with Short's thrashing machine, but it is not likely that any spark ould have gone from the engino to the stacks, owing to the distance. The origin is therefore a mystery. The stacks ware insured in the Union office for about £430, which covers the loss. There is no clue as to the cause of the fire. The Star to-day makes a highly complimentary reference to the leading article in the Waikato Times of Tuesday, re Local Government. The Native Minister leaves to-morrow for Cambridge. He looks over Patatere, and proceeds over the new road to the Lakes with a view of inspecting the works.
