The Hobart Cup was worth £313 14s. Otautau races are fixed for Easter Monday. Mr Leniiard's winning at Waikato came to £240. Mr W. I'Aneon, the well-known English sportsman, died on the 10th January, aged 71. The Australian Coursing Club have passed a resolution to the effect that amalgamation with the Victoria Coursing Club is undesirable. "Wellington, Wandering Jew, and Canary are equal favourites for the Sydney Cup at 100 to 5. Sir Garnet and Hilarious between them earned £257 for Mr Prince at Inveroargill. Mr Butler's cheque came to £180 10s; Mr Kidd, a local owner, won £56 15 ; Chaafe, £23, 15s and Mr Goodman — unlucky Harry — tied Mr Anderson with £19. Altogether £535 was paid away in stakes. Grand Flaneur's time for the V.R.C. Leger was 3min 16^seconds. He won easily by two lengths. Yoemans rode Progress. " Spectator" points out that the Wanganui general entries this year number 80, as against 62 last year, and 47 in 1879. " Augur" tells us that " all the available money has been taken about Darebin for the V.R.C. Dorby and Melbourne Cup of next spring, this colt having been backed to win about £15,000 at 1000 to 10." D.irbin is ono of Lurline's colts. Sir Modred having incurred, by winning the Dunedin Cup, a penalty of 101b for the Napier Handicap, haa been scratched for his engagements at the autumn meeting of the H B.J.C.
