HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present — His Worship the Mayor, Cra. Peat, Price, McGarrigle, Tippen, and Jones. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. Vouchers were received from the Treasury, Wellington, for the sum of £1, being amount of fine collected under Licensing Act, and for £69 163 Bd, being subsidy upon the amount of rates collected up to the 31st March, 1880, the sum of £122 having been deducted on account of hospitals and charitable aid. Some discussion took place on the question of the stoppage of the major portion of the subsidy, on account of hospitals, <fee., the Councillors expressing great dissatisfaction with the action of the Government. Ultimately it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Jones, " That the subject of the stoppage of the subsidy be referred to the members for Waipa and Waikato with a view to obtain the bill of particulars, or the basis upon which the stoppages are made. A letter from Mr Murless, asking to be allowed to work out his rates by clearing furze, was read and received. The Bridge toll collector reported certain cases of breach of the Bylaws, but under the circumstances detailed, it wap resolved to take no action. An application from Mr R. Harris, to remove a crossing in Grey-street at his own expense, was granted. A further report from the Toll collector re breach, of the Bylaws was received. Permission was granted to Mr F. Dalton, to remove a few loads of gravel from the Corporation pit. Applications were received from Messrs. S. Davis and E. McGarrigle, for leasing certain of the Borough endowments. Letters were received from the Undersecretary for lands and the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, notifying that Lot 417 had been vested in the Corporation, for the protection of the river banks. Permission was granted to Mr Cawkwell to cart a few loads of gravel on to the coach road leading to the Lake. The commifcfcee appointed to inspect the roads in the Borough, with a view to deciding where furze is required to be removed, reported that the following had received notice to clear and grub up furze on roads abutting on their several properties : — Messrs D. M. Beere, S. Fouisham, Jno. Deegan, Jno. Moore, Wm. Alexander, Jno. Mahon, and the Trustees of the Catholic Church property. The Under Secretary for Public Works wrote forwarding copies of specifications for screwing up and painting the Hamilton traffic bridge, as required by the Council. Notice of motion was given to recind a resolution passed at a previous meeting to the effect that the work be carried out under the supervision of the Borough workman, and it was resolved that tenders be called for painting and screwing up the bridge to be considered at a special meeting of the Council to be held on Friday the Ist of April. Mrs Ross- Watts wrote asking whether the Council could render any assistance to her in removing the gorse from Moran's acre, as the safety of the applicant's house depended upon its removal, in case of fire, &c. It was resolred to give notice to owners and occupiers of lots 31, 35, 37, Hamilton West, to have the furze cleared from about their premises, in accordance with the Act. Mr Gwynne, chairman of the Hamilton West School Committee, wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the bad state of the approach to the school from Victoria-street, and asking to have it made accessible for drays, with a gravelled footpath for the children. The letter was referred to the Works Committee. Mr Daley, toll-collector, wrote pointing out to the Council the need for providing further convenience fdr the toll-collector. The present toll-house was altogether un-» suitable. Owing to the dust, which in dry, and the water which in wet weather found ingress, lie was unable to keep anything, not even food,' within the building. The Councillors generally agreed that further accommodation for the toll-keeper was absolutely necessary, and on the motion of Cr. Peat, seconded by Cr. McGarrigle, it was resolved "That the Works Committee be empowered to prepare specifications for additions and alterations to the toll-house, and call for tenders for same as soon as possible, the coat not to exceed £40. " The Works Committee's reports on various works were read and received. Councillors Tippen and Peat were appointed members of the Works Committee, vice Councillors Davis and Mullions, and the Mayor was appointed chairman. lirv/as resolved to retain the services of the toll-keeper for the ensuing month. It was resolved to draw the attention of the police to the necessity for carrying out the provisions of By-law No. 4, which provides for impoundingstray cattle within a certain radius of the post-offices on both Bides of the river. It was resolved to give notice to Mr. Tanfield to remove the funse hedge bounding lots 81 and 89 Hamiltou West in accordance with the Act. The question of gravelling the foot-path in upper Clarence-street was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. On the motion of Cr McGarrigle seconded by Cr Jones, it was resolved that a special meeting of the Council be held en Taesday the 22nd inst for the purpose of considering the leasing of the Borough Endowments and the terms and conditions thereof. On the motion of Cr MsGarrigle seconded by His Worship the Mayor it was resolved " That local clergymen of all denominations, officiating in the Waikato, travel free of toll either with horae or vehicle (to and fro) over the Hamilton Traffic Bridge." , ' The Town Clerk read the statement of accounts as follows : — General account overdraft £505 8s ; special fondaocou»t, balance at Bank £299 Is 3d.
