CAMBRIDGE WATER SUPPLY QUESTION.

Gapt\ix LivdsAY, .13 representing the Waikato Steam Navigation Company, visited Cambridge a few days ago for the purpose of negotiating -with the Local Board arrangements for supplying the tdwn with water. The subject was alluded to in a recent issue, and information given relative to the Steam Navigation Company's pioject in relation to this question. The visit of Captain Lindsay, considering the present state of the town, consequent n pon. the prevalence of drought, was an opportune one, and we are not at all Surprised to hear that his proposal* were favourably received. Of course nothing definite has yet taken place, but the matter is so far in training that in a shoit time it may bo expected to make its appearance before the Board itu the shape of a foi mal proposal. The scene of tiie Company's operations is that point of the river's bank situated towards the extreme north end of Duke-street. <jAt this place the bank is upwards of 200 feet deep. Approaching the scene of * ouoivvtions fronx tho town side, the ground _JH.-^ direct cour&e with the aforesaid street line, forms a terrace, perhaps 20 feet in hight. At that height* the ground * attains an exact level with the highest building in Duke-street, so that the situation being otherwise convenient in its close proximity to the river, and the portion- chosen for tho Steamboat Com-* pany's lift, is one which would be admirably chosen for collecting a water supply. It has been ascertained that for a jsiuu of £600 the requisites can be ob- ' tai'neel, in the shape of tanks and communication pipes, sufficient to carry the water to the extreme southern end of Duke-street. By placing the&e tanks on a trestle, 30 feet in height, the water could be raised to a height of, at least, 30 'fe. e * above the highest building- in XjDtike-stiiteel," and .also to the lavel of. the roof of the National Hotel in the other direction. Having got these requisites I \ at the expense of the town, what the Company purpose doing is to - provide 1 the requisite' pumping power, from the engine they are about construe- - ting in connection with their "lift," so as to raise 10,000 gallons of water per day at a charge of '£2 per week. It is thought that supply will be enough for the- requirements of the place, but if the Suantity is found to be insufficient then ie company will be prepared to supply an additional quantity at a uniform rate per 1000 gallons. We need hardly say that we look upon the project as'being 1 feasible, and one which is very likely to recommend itself to the favorable consideration of the local authorities A stream of water sudh as a supply of this kiud would provide, flowing through the gully Tioles; would be of/immense importance* toHhe place in a saintary^point of view. It has also been calculated that at a cost of from five to ten siltings per day the streets, when the weather required it, "could be saturated so completely as,to -prevent' dust.Tis.ing in the smallest clotid, or otherwise rendering street truflio at nil tdijsajtfrefeable in that respect.
