RESIDENT MAGISTRATES COURT, HAMILTON. (Before H. W. Northcroft, Esq., R.M., and His Worship the Mayor.

Wife Desertion*.— William Lyons was charged with wife desertion. There was no appearance of defendant, and Sergeant McCrovern asked for an adjournment for a month to see if some arrangement would be come to. — Adjournment granted.

Breach of the Stami 1 A<t.— John Gilmour was charged with having on the 3rd inst., given an unstamped receipt to one Isabella Moore for the sum of £3. — Mr Maogregor Hay appeared for the defendant and plea ied guilty, urging that his client had committed the act in ignor* auce of the fact that a written acknowledgement of payment did require a stamp. In mitigation of penalty he would like to call Mrs Moore, in order to show that the action was prompted by malice, she having been threatened with legal proceedings by the defendant. The Bench ruled that as the offence had been admitted they would not hear the [ evidence desired, and fined the defendant £2 with costs.

Deunkknness. — William Lawlor was ' summoned for b Q ing drunk and disorderly on the 2 1th, and further with being an. habitual drunkard. — Sergeant McGovern said the defendant had behaved himself very well since Christmas Eve holidays, and he would therefore a.sk that the second charge be withdrawn. — The Bench said as the defendant had kept his promise to the police not to get drunk wheu he was released on Christmas morning, they woul I discharge him with a caution. The second charge would be withdrawn. John Monaghan was charged on a sum* mons with being drunk and disorderly on the 24th, and further with a breach of the Licensing Act by being drunk three times within one week. — The defendant did not put in an appearance, and Censtable Murray was put into the box to prove the charge. — On the first charge the defendant was fined 30s and costs, and on the second, sentenced to be imprisoned for seven days in Mount Eden gaol.

On the great Denny Estate in County Kerry, which includes the town of TVa« lee and the country for many miles around, a circular has been issued, stating that the owners — Sir E, Denny and Mr R. A. Dermy — are prepared to join in executing leases for ever to the occupying i tenants. j Francesco Rizzoli, professor of surgery at the University of Bologna, who died recently, has bequeathed his vast wealth estimated at nearly 6,000,000f., to the municipality of Bologna, with the stipulation that it should be devoted to the completion and maintenance of the Model Orthopaedic Hospital on his estate at San Michele, in Bosco, an institution on which he had, during his lifetime, expended a sum of 2,000,000f. The question as to wether female preachers should be formally recognised by the Church is likely to cause some stir in America. Two ladies having gone through a regular thoological course have presented themselves to one of the bishops for ordination, but he has declined to receive them, whereupon an appeal to the conference has been decided upon. There is another sensational divorce case on the tapis in the South Seas. The petitioner is a gentleman who was born in a mud cabin in Wicklow. H© has little education, but is now an insular magnate.
