RESIDENT MAGISTRATES COURT, HAMILTON. (Before H. W. Northcroft, Esq., R.M., and His Worship the Mayor.

Wife Desertion*.— William Lyons was charged with wife desertion. There was no appearance of defendant, and Sergeant McCrovern asked for an adjournment for a month to see if some arrangement would be come to. — Adjournment granted.

Breach of the Stami 1 A<t.— John Gilmour was charged with having on the 3rd inst., given an unstamped receipt to one Isabella Moore for the sum of £3. — Mr Maogregor Hay appeared for the defendant and plea ied guilty, urging that his client had committed the act in ignor* auce of the fact that a written acknowledgement of payment did require a stamp. In mitigation of penalty he would like to call Mrs Moore, in order to show that the action was prompted by malice, she having been threatened with legal proceedings by the defendant. The Bench ruled that as the offence had been admitted they would not hear the [ evidence desired, and fined the defendant £2 with costs.
