THE ALLEGED SHEEP-STEAL-ING- CAKE AT CAMBRIDGE.
BfcXJAMiv Oakland, whose apprehension on the serious charge of sheep-stealing was mentioned in last issue, was brought up before the K. M. Court, Cambridge, on Tuesday, charged with this ofl'ence. The Bench was occupied by Mr Wells, J.P. Mr Beale appeared for the accused. On the application of the police, a remand was granted to Friday. The Magistrate, in compliance with an application made by Mr Beale, admitted the accused to bail : himself in £50, and two sureties of £25 each. Garland's case has attracted a considerable amount of attention, and some surprise is felt at the unfortunate position in which he finds himself placed. He is a settler in the district, and is hitherto understood to have borne an irreproachable character. The man himself seems to have become somewhat paralysed by the position in which he finds himself placed, and, acting on that impulse, is said to have made and signed a full confession of guilt. But for that fact it is believed serious doubts would have been entertained by his friends as to the felonious intent in appropriating the sheep to his own use.
