THE BEER TAX. TO THE EDITOR.

Sin, — I am sm priced that "Working Man" should have answered my letter in the childish strain he has adopted in your ihrtiie of the 2oth inst. It would appear from his answer to my first question, that after all the outcry he bas made about the tax falling heavily on the working man, the grievance has resolved itself into a question ot fjnr(!tt;/> not price. Surely if " Working Man" is proffered an inferior article, the remedy is in his own hands. However, he has shewn himself so disingenious throughout this controversey that he must forgive me if I choose to doubt this last assertion as to the wateriness of his beer. His argument in connection with this is ridiculous, viz,, threepence makes it watery. Sixpence would make it twice as watery ; therefore to pursue his argument to its inevitable j conclusion, one shilling would make it all water ! Good Templars ought to attend to this. I am grateful to " Working Man" for his compliment concerning my cleverness, and am only grieved to think I cannot return it. Tho fact of " Working Man's" deficiency is noc evidence that working men as a rule are wanting iv cleverness. Your correspondent "admires Grey for his actions ;" had he said " talk," I could have understood his admiration. But to accuse Sir George of action is rather too good, and wouJr l , l fancy, provoke a smile from the "gijahd old man" himself. ♦'Working Mart's" answer to my second question is simply a clumsy evasion. I must novr bid adieu to "Working Man," wishing him better success in hia contract than he has achieved as a 6cribe.
