UNION DEFEAT BIVERTON

J. O'Grady of the Union Club, Invercargill, delivered the opening ball of the first match of the season for the Riverton Cricket Club. Union won the match by 50 runs, O. V. Shirley retiring with 34 not out.' Union journeyed to Riverton, both teams playing 14 men each. L. F. Ward and Rev. J. M. Blight were opening batsmen for the home team, Ward, taking first strike for Biverton. The weather was fine but boisterous, matting was down on the pitch and the outfield , was in fair order. It being the first game for either side this season all the players were rather cautious. Taylor and Webb put up some bright cricket for the home team while Shirley and Poole "opened out for Union", Poole putting two successive balls out of the paddock off Lee's bowling.- -The. rapid succession of players kept the interest in the game sustained, the bowlers after loosening their shoulders- Soon getting the length of the wicket. Lee's to Shirley was an expensive no ball, it having pitched .Shirley's middle stump well out of the ground, lifter that Shirley-got set, eventually retiring. R. Dunlop, the wicketkeeper for Union permitted only five byes to pass him. L.- Ward, the keeper for Riverton, quickly got his eye in against some fast bowling. t ■ The scores were: ~ '' .BIVERTON. L. ANNUAL MEETING OF CENTRALWESTERN. SUB-ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the above held at. Otantau on Monday evening was attended by Messrs E. Matheson

(president), H. Hammond, G. Kettle, C. Watson (Limehills), W. G. Melton, A, A. Fisher, M. Millar (Otautau), F Rawle, J. Wood (Winton) ; C. Thompson and R. Buchan (Thornbury), J. Fitzpatrick and J. W. Buchanan (Biverton). Apologies were accepted from delegates of Ohai, Nightcaps and Wairio Clubs.

The president extended a welcome and expressed pleasure at the attendance which showed there was still plenty of interest in the game. In the annual report and balancesheet finances show an improvement, the year showing an excess 'of income over expenditure of £6 6/9. The transfer of this amount brings the accumulated funds to £ls 19/5, which must be a pleasing figure. Nine clubs contested the Boyle Cup, eventually winning by a. close margin from Limehills, with Win ton third and Nightcaps fourth. The Cup was prer sented to Otautau at the annual social function held in the supper , room, : Otautau Town Hall. 1 It was intimated neither Wairio noi Fairfax. Clubs* would be fielding teams i.this season.

Mr Matheson said he was pleased to see two Biverton delegates present, and hoped the club, instead of linking up with Invercargill, would join up with Central-Western, as they had some very promising players in that locality. •Despite the war, they hoped' the' competition would be carried on as sport was necessary to all men. He also wished .to thank everyone for Icfyal support during his two ysrrs as president. The following office-bearers were ■elected:

Patron—Mr F. Boyle. President—Mr E. Matheson (re-elect-ed) .

Vice-presidents—Messrs A. A. Fisher (Otautau), H. Hammond (Limehills), (Ohai), W. Urquhart (Thornbury), W. Simmers (Winton), T. Miller (Oreti). Secretary—Mr M. MillarT Auditor—Mr W. G. Melton. Selectors—Messrs H. Hammond and A. H. S. Cutler. • Emergency committee Messrs Matheson, Fisher, Millar and Rawle. Mr J. Fitzpatrick thanked the president for his remarks about the -Riverton Club, and asked that it be granted permission to join up with Invercargill. He said that transport could be arranged to the city, whereas ' some difficulty would be experienced in travelling to matches in the Western District. The members were keen r join up with Central-Western, but because of the petrol restrictions -this was impossible, and the Club would go to Invercargill provided it got the consent of the sub-association. Mr Hammond saiS there would be difficulties in the way of transport, and he had said repeatedly that the journey to Riverton was a long one. He was strongly in favour of Riverton going to Invercargill if it so suited. Mr Fisher supported these remarks, but said it should be provisional under the existing circumstances. He thought that consent should be from year to year. If the restrictions were lifted it was the duty of Riverton to join up with Central-Western. ,He moved in this direction. Mr Hammond seconded the motion which was carried. No objection was raised.by the other delegates and it was decided to grant the application for this season. J. Mitchell, secretary, Fairfax Club, advised the club had insufficient playing members and wished to v withdraw from the competition.—Received.

It was decided to invite entries from clubs for the competition b.y Monday, 16th October, and resolved that the competition matches start on Saturday, '2Bth October. In view of the fact that Otantau Club plays on a turf wicket, delegates

thought.it a good idea if the Otantau

Club played several travelling matches, then, .all its home games together and finish its travelling games at the end of the'draw. On the motion of Messrs Hammond and Rawle the emergency committee were instructed to make the draw to meet this decision.

The affiliation and levy was made the same as last year, i.e., £1 10s per club* Messrs H. Hammond, Hugh Smyth and J. Todd were appointed sub-asso-ciation umpires.
