RIVERTON DISTRICT BRASS BAND.

The adjourned public meeting con- \ iiied by tlie members of the band, m order to enlist the sympathy and aid of the public in raising funds for the purchase of new instruments, was held Mi More’s Hall on ';uemay'evening. There was a splendid response to the hand’s invitation to the public, over fifty representative citizens being prosent. Mr G. Korso was voted to the

chair. Mr Kerse briefly outlined the purpose of the meeting. It was called for the' purpose of deciding whether the public would support and help the band in raising funds for tlie instruments, and if the public decided to do so, to make arrangements for raising the fund. The present instruments bad been purchased from the Invercargill Garrison, and were now worn |out and obsolete. Taking it aas re presentative meeting, lie thought the miblic were of the opiiion that the hand needs assistance in this project. ; At the Chairman’s inyitaiion rdr i Hannon, bandmaster, gave the public j tlie facts regarding the cost of new injstruments and stated that tlie band [needed about £3OO to give them the instruments they require. He instanced the cost of repairing one instrument, ot £4 7s 6d, and said even it was not, of much use.

Mr Hunter said the bud was an important imtiTiti n, and reeds assistance but the project for raising funds, was a bazaar. He was not in favour of uns as the ladies on whom they would rely to do the great hulk of the work, and not long finished up the work for the League’s bazaar. It was ‘not fair to ask them t 0 start straight, away. He thought that a Paddy’ market ptojx* iy conducted, • nd he d at st ted intervals was the best idea, and in the case of a Paddy’s market, there is a much greater recompense for a much smaller amount of work, and less expense. ~ , The ,motion of Mr Hunter, that. a committee be formed to hold a seiies of Paddy’s markets to raise funds for the band was carried.
