OBITUARY

/\ AIR THOMAS HELM. X There passed away at his residence Palmerston st., Riverton, on Wednesday, a well-known townsman in the person of Mr Thomas Helm, at ;he advanced age of 84 years Born at Howack, -Scotland, deceased left his native land and arrived at Port Chalmers by the ship Jura, in 1802. Shortly after his arrival he took iip a position as shepherd, on Cargill ind Anderson’s station, eventually becoming manager of Teviot a position he held for a number of years, lie then decided to go in for farming • -n his own account, and took up land at Grove Bush and Glencoe, the latter place receiving its name from him. Owing to failing health he retired, and lived°for two years at Mataura, thence coming to .Riverton, where he and Ins family* have resided for over 10 years. In 187-7 Mr Heim married Annie Bl«a- ‘ beth Miller, daughter of Mr Miller,'a well-known build.x, of Lawrence, and leaves a large family of sons and daughters, namely: John (Wanganui), Samuel y (farmer, Riverton), Thomas (farmer, Fairfax), Fredorik (Hastings), Angus (Railway Wonksjhoips, • Invercargill), Harry (firm of’ Helm and Dickson, Riverton), Andrew (Postal Department, Riverton), and Mrs McAuslan (Bal-, elutha), Mrs Stevenson (Balclutha) and Miss Lucy (Riverton). The late Mr Helm was of a very quiet and retiring disposition, and a man of the highest integrity. In former years he was wont to enter into the social md church life of the community, and t is worthy ot note that when retiring from farming at Glencoe, Mr and Mrs Holm and family were tendered the largest farewell field in the district, and presented with a beautiful silver service, and lie and his wife publicly thanked for the valuable services rendered to the social and material welfare of the district. His remains will'be interred in the Eastern cemetery. Invercargill on WlUday.
