SANITARY SERVICE

In reporting on the Sanitary system I at the last meeting of the League. Dr Gordon stated that; the present sysleni was disgusting. If the present pan-system in use was to lie continued, the alternate pan should be adopted, so that a clean pan would he put down when the full one was removed. A flushing sys<tem such as is used in towns, with a proper water supply and drainage system could not be brought about in Riverton for many years owing to the excessive cost, but he did strongly advocate the use of septic-tanks in the Borough, and the present drainage -,ystem in Riverton was quite sufficient to deal with the offluent from these. Of course a municipal water supply was desirable, but there was no reason why wash downs should not be i'lltjroduced, wliciro (householders wore dependent on roof water collected in ranks. Several people had already adopted the septic tank and wash down in Riverton, but he thought that in iiture license to build should not be granted unless the plans and specifications contained provision for this necessary improvement, while houses already in existence should have them installed in which case if tlie householder could not afford the outlay, installation would be at the expense of rhe Borough , who would receive interest and sinking fund, in an annual layment from such householder. The ost of the service would bo about £2O, the amunt paid by such householder would not be more than 30/- per annum, that is practically the cost to ea'cb householder fos the presefnt removal system if carried out weekly, as it riiould be. This innovation would cost tlie Borough practically nothing and it could be adopted equally well in north and south Riverton, and even if the drainage system could not be made use of, the effluent could be got rid of in a simple way by draining into a. sink-hole or running off into the sandy soil.
