MEAT FREIGHTS.

SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTIONS ANNOUNCED.

EQUAL TO 2s 6d PER SHEEP.

WELLINGTON, Nov. 3.

Before the ordinary business of the House commenced this evening Mr Massey read letters on the subject of meat freights received by him from the Controller of Imiperial Government Supplies. The first letter, Jilted the 2nd iiist., read as follows: Beeif Freights.—Tho previous rate of freight was lfd per lb, pliiis 5 per cent., so the reduction on freight is fd per lb, plus 5 per cent.—equal to l-i> per cent. The combined reduction in freight and freezing charges will amount to about id per lb. Stocks of beef, to which the offer refers, amount to about 300,000 freight carcases (601 b). The second letter, dated to-day, dealt with the rates of .freigli te on present stocks of meat, and was as follows:

Further to tny memo, of yesterday, I have to advise you that the shipping companies have received a further cable this afternoon that, in

order to ease the position an allowance of jd per lb will be made on freight rates on heavy ewes and wethers in ‘store, in addition to a reduction on beef, if accepted, and) on the name terms.

The cable adds that the Liners’ Conference iii London does not gee its .vay to review the freights for the coming season until the date fixed with you—that is, the first week in January. Commenting on these letter*?, Mr Massey said he was thankful for small ncrcios. Even these concessions were of great importance to farmers, as one farmer had informed him they ment a difference of 2s 6d per head on fat sheep. .
