SOUTHLAND MEMBERS.

CONFERENCE AT INVERCARGILL. The initial conference of Southland members of Parliament was held in Invercargill on Wednesday, and was attended! by Hons. T. Mac Gibbon and A. F. Hawke, M’s.L.O., the Hon. J. A, Hanan, and Messrs G. J. Anderson, John Hamilton, Adan* Hamilton, and A. S. Malcolm, M’s.P. An apology was received from Mr J. Horn. Mr Anderson, who convened the meeting, in his opening remarks emphasised the importance of unity of action with regard to matters pertaining to the progress of the province. A great advantage was to bo gained by meeting deputations on those matters that affected! the welfare of the district. All those present agreed, and the Hon. J. A. Hanan was elected chairman and the Hon. A. F. Hawke secretary’ of the Southland members’ conference. A deputation was received from the Returned Soldiers’ Association which expressed the importance df having their ’ claims brought prominently before Parliament. After some discussion the conference' suggested) that the R.S.A. should reduce its proposals to writing and meet the members of the conference at their next*meeting.
