BRUCE BY-ELECTION.
MR J. EDIE ELECTED. The election for the Bruce seat, rendered vacant by the resignation of Sir James Allen, was held on Wednesday, when. Mr Jno. Kdie, the Liberal candidate,''was returned by a majority of 201. In the previous election he was defeated by 126. TH® voting was as follows: John Edie (Liberal) 2408 . James Begg (Reform) 9207 Majority for Edie 201 THE NEW MEMBER. Mr John Edie was boa in New South Wales in 1856, and came to Now Zealand from- Victoria in 1863. He was educated at the Waitahuna ■School, under the late Mr Daniel Clarke. On leaving school he worked on his father’s farm at Waitahuna! for four years. He then joined! a survey party as a cadet, under the late Mr O. W. Adams'. In 1878 Mr Edie, when 20 years of age, was appointed assistant surveyor to the Government Department, being employed all over Otago, and for several years in the Catlius River bush district. Fifteen years ago- Mr Edie was appointed engineer for the Tuapeka County, a position he holds at the present time. He has- taken, an active interest in the mining industry in Otago, and has also followed farming pursuits. He has a farm of 900 acres at Tuapeka West, this being worked in conjunction with farms belonging to his two sons. He is at present Mayor off Lawrence.
