RIVERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Council, held last evening, was attended by the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. Jas. Hymers), and Councillors E. B. Gee, 0. E. Johnstone, E. B. Patrick, T. King, and J. H. F. Green. W. Moir asked permission to build a five-roomed residence on secticm 4, hi'ck ], Waldeck.—Referred to Property Commit tee. A. F. Webb asked permission to lay a crain from, his preanises to ! connect with main drain.—Left to Works Committee, with- power to act. S. Helm drew attention to a portion of the road in, South Riverton, which required gravelling.; The writer was prepared to cart gravel for same. Left-to Works Committee, with power to act. Jno. Hunt wrote iu connection with crossing leading to his property, South Riverton, and personally waited cu the Council in connection , with • application. At the present time was impossible to get a- dray into his property.—After some discussion, it was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Works Committee, The Defence Department wrote of- * lering four machine guns as a war trophy to the Borough.—Accepted!. The Mayor of Invercargill (Mr J. Stead) and Mr Longuet (convenor) asked the co-operation of the Borough Council in giving a welcome to the Prince of Wales. A meeting of delegates will be held in Invercargill on loth inst. (to-day) for the purpose of making arrangements. They suggested that the borough provide a banner to be carried in the procession.—On the motion of Cr. Johnstone, seconded by • Cr. Gee, it was resolved to provide a banner. The Dunedin Borough Council wrote asking the co-operation of the local borough in urging upon: the Government the desirability of providing; a bonus to tuo.se with largo families, Decided to support the resolution. ' D. Webb, surveyor, Invercargill, wrote iu regard to the subdivision of uauleck estate, and suggested that the sum of £3OO to be spent on drains should be expended on James street, in regard to grades, there were only three portions of the road with steep grades, the worst of these being 1 in 7 and about three chains in length. He had not completed the laying out of all the proposed roads, but would forward plans when completed.—After seme discussion it was resolved to wait until the complete plan of the subdivision was submitted, and the Works Committee would then confer with Mr Baker, County Engineer. The borough "surfaceman submitted a report of works carried out during the month. Forty-eight tins of petrol bad been used for the manufacture of gas. The captain of the Kotare bad lodged a complaint ’ that the beacons were not in the proper places. He, the surfaceman, suggested that soundings be taken to- ascertain the depth of the channel. A light was wanted at the wharf, gravel was required on the Aparima road, Shrewsbury street, and the bay road. Some planks on the bridge required spiking. —Report adopted. 'lire Gas Committee recommended that the price of gas be increased from 5/- to 8/- per thousand feet.— Report adopted. (Jr Green, for the Property Committee, reported that he had inspected the fence around the Recreation ground, and estimated repairs at £2l 10/-. The Beautifying Society wrote asking for some timber to place on the west ■ side of the monument in the event of the Council pulling the fence down. (Jr. Johnstone suggested demolishing toe cast fence, and to' repair the fence on the west side, the former to ■ bo re-erected with wire.—lt was resolved to effect repairs accordingly, tenders to be Called) for the work. Johnstone said that notwithstanding a resolution passed by the Council that the owner of the Endor be notified to remove the hulk from the foreshore, South Riverton, no notice had been taken.—lt was resolved! to ascertain Jf J. .Fade was the owner, and failing a reply within a week, the Harbour Board to act. The Gas Committee submitted a report on gas, and recommended, that in view of the extra cost of petrol, to increase the price from 5/- to 8/- per thousand feet.—Report adopted. Cr. Gee brought up the question of harbour improvements, and suggested ‘ that a. public meeting be called to consider same.—Cr. Patrick said if they could widen the scope of the Harbour Board by having representatives from the county, he saw no reason why the scheme should not go ahead. The Harbour Board had a sum of £3OOO on hand, and valuable endowments. A harbour would benefit the county as a whole.—lt was resolved to hold a-public meeting at an early date.
