Notwithstanding the fact that a commission lias been sitting to go. into the question of the control of rivers throughout New Zealand the members of the Waimatuku lliver Board are apparently going in for protective and drainage works without waiting for the result of the Board's recommendations. We. have, for years past favoured the appointment of one controlling authority for carrying out river protective works, viz., the County Council. In the first place the cost is cheaper for the settler, and the work is carried out under the supervision of the county’s engineer. The formation of a river board and the payment of salaries to the clerk and engineer, combined with the legal expenses involved, makes the undertaking a luxury for the settlers intcreshod.
