Otautau Town Board.

Owing to alterations being madegin the Town Hail, which is being enlarged, the monthly meeting of the Board was held in office, Present: Messrs Walton (chairman). Officer, King, O'Brien, Ford, Seatter, and Mathe&on. Outward correspondence was read, and in this connection members repressed that the clerk bo accorded thanks for the trouble taken in providing information supplied in the various letters written. Mr J. C. Thomson, M.P., forwarded •a letter from the Minister of Railways intimating that provision would not be made at present for placing a verandah at Otautau Railway Station.— Received. Mr J. 0. Thomson, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Public Works to the effect that the Board's request for payment of a subsidy 'towards the worl< done 01 river protective works would be considered. — Received.

Mr J. 0. Thomson, M.P., forwarded a letter regarding an application to have t)ie bush lands above QtautaU opened for settlement. The fallowing is the Minister's reply:—''lt is proposed to remove the reservation from a't'eut 30,000 acres in the District during this session, and the necessary papers to accomplish this have already been laid on the table of the Hou-e. As soon as tin' requisite formalities have been complied with the lands will be subdivided into areas suitable for settlement." K'eceived. A motion was carried that Mr Thomson, M.P., be titanked for lm courtesy and promptitude in replying to the various matters referred tj him for consideration. The surfaceman asked for a truck of pipes to enable some connections with main sawer to be made. It was decided ratepayers referred to be informed that they mu&t comply with the order of the Health Department to conaect their proper-

ties with the main stwer. Ths action of the chairman in ordering a truck of drjin pipes was approved. The District Engineer to be inarmed the Board will agree to bis connecliug Mr Bulrnan's " pi' pe ty with main sewer. Wright Stephenson] & Co, Ltd wrote that they had promised to tak, out heir auctioneer's license, com-e mencing January, 1910, with the Invercargiil Corporation. Referred to Board's solicit >rs fotheir direction as to W-iafc further steps should be taken. .The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote forwarding copy of an original proclamation of Otautau River District as it appeared in the Gazette of 29ih September, 1880. it was decided that Mr J. C, Thomson, M.P., for the district, be asked to wait, upon the Minister for Finance with reference to the Board's application for loan, The clerk to iurmsb. all particulars. It was resolved to hold a special met ting of the Board on Monday, 15th inst, at 7 o'clock, to consider dealing wi.h the public domain. lermission was asked by Mr Saun d rs to erect a verandah, and also to grant a licsm'e for billiard saloon lin premises to be occupied by Mr N. Mr Kmg's notice of rnot'op to the affect that in future*' the Board meet fortnightly, was seconded by Mr O'Brien, who said he thought it would be' advantageous if the Board met fortnightly. Mr Ford said the objection he had was. that there was no convenient :;u.lding in which to hold the meeting. He was opposed to the motion. MrMuthesou said in hi 3 opinion

In reply, Mr King said in view of the opinions expressed he would not press the motion, but would bring it f upward again at a more opportune season. Th i matter then dropped. Accounts amounting to £26 5s uere passed for payment. The Engineer submitted an estimate of cost of replanting bridge and repairing main street in North Otau-1 tau

The chairman said he had been over the whole of the road with the engineer, and it was seen that five inches of gravel would bo siifficiett, It would not be necessary, however, to put five inches over the whole road but that would he die average needed to make a good job. Mr King moved and Mr O'Brien seconded that the Countv Council bo advised that the Board" proposed to proree:l with the bridge as estimated in the letter submitted, and that tinengineer's recommendation to spend £166 on the road is approved, and that the County Council be asked to provide their share. In connection with this matter it

was decided that on the Wallace County Council approving of the work, the Works Conunirteo proceed with the grading by day labour or otherwise, aud that tenders be called for gravelling to be considered at next meeting.
