MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

There being two candidates nominated for the position of councillor for the North Ward of the Borough) of Riverton, caused by the elevation of Councillor Pankhurst to the Mayoral chair, a poll took place yesterday, more than usual interest being manifested. At 7.15 p.m. the Returning Officer (Mi: Q. O. Cassels) announced the result of the poll, which was as follows :—H. H. Twemlow, 83 votes ; C. E. Johnstone, 49. He declared the former gentleman duly elected. Mr-Twemlow thanked-the ratepayers for electing him to the council, more especially as he had been a former mem-

i ber. He might say that the contest had i been a pleasant one, as the best of feeling . had existed between his opponent and himself. The ratepayers should encourage the councillors in their work, and so forward the interests of the borough, in which place the county member resided, and which must ultimately be the chief centre of the district. Among several things mooted for the benefit of the town, he wonld like to see the Kaik taken over by the council, thus enabling the town to be more closely settled, and providing , homes for the working men. It was important that the harbour should be kept open, which would foster our sawmilling | industry. The harbour endowments had increased in value from L9O to L 220. At one time the Government proposed taking over the liability and endowments of the Harbour Board, but this was strongly opposed by two gentlemen of the town, viz., Messrs Akhurst, senr., and Jno. Petchell, who were instrumental in keeping the Board in existence. In conclusion he again thanked the ratepayers, and said that during his term of office, which would be about one year, he would be glad to devote his time to the welfare of the majority the ratepayers. Mr Johnstone said although he stood a defeated candidate, he would stand again when a vacancy occurred. The election had been contested with the best of feeling between his opponent and himself. In conclusion he thanked those ratepayers who had voted for him, and the Returning Officer (Mr Cassels) for his courtesy.
