A LIBEL CASE.
At the Invercargill Supreme Court the case of the Rev Mr Smellie v. E. G. Maopherson, proprietor and editor of the Wyndbam Farmer, a claim for £IOOO damages for alleeed libel is being heard. The facts are briefly that certain charges, including nn(■ruthfulness and wrongful retention of money were laid by a section of the congregation aga.nst their minister, and a entnnnssion was appointed by the synod to hear the charges. The commission hold an informal meeting at Wyndham, the chairman requesting that the proceedings should not be published. The Farmer, however, published a report, including charges which were no) read, though referred to at the meeting. Ihe defence is that the report was a fair one of the proceedings. A large number of witnesses are to be examined, and the case will last several days. Mr A Stont appear* for the plaintiff and Mr J Macalisler for defendant.
