SMUGGLED IN A WALKING-STICK.

Few people are, perhaps, aware that a walk-, ing-stick was the means by which silk was introduced into Europe. The silkworm is a native of China, and the>, Chinese were the first to discover it and its use ; but they tried to keep it to themselves by searching everyone who passed out of theip country. However, a European monk, learning the secret when in China, made a walking-stick, at the bottom of which he fixed a little case, containing a few eggs of the silk-worm. With this stick he set out for Europe, where he arrived safely with the eggs, none having been found on him when leaving China.
