W. D. A. & P. ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL GRAIN SHOW

Tliornbury was this year chosen as the convincing ground for the fourteenth annual show of grain, roots, dairy produce, poultry, etc., and the weather on Wednesday last being simply delightful for this season, it was not to be wondered that there was a good attendance of the public and a lai-ge number of entries. Messrs Whittingbam Bros, and lustone's large grain store was kindly lent for the occasion, aud proved very suitable in every way. The action of the Committee in removing the show from Rivcrton was freely criticised by residents west of Tliornbury, and while the absence of adequate accommodation at the latter place would have been severely felt had the weather proved unpropitious, as it was, the change made very little difference on the amount taken at the door. The total was only six shillings short of that taken at Riverton last year, while there vf&s £B odd moro entry money, the entries totalling 41 more than at the previous show. Of course there might have been an equal increase of: entries had the show been hold in Riverton. All the arrangements were carried out in a satisfacory manner. The President (Mr A. Ca'der) and Secretary (Mr B. Hancock) with their numerous assistants worked indefatigably to achieve what was generally pronounced to be a big success. The judges wore—Messrs Cleave and Fleming for grain, seeds and roots ; Messrs Affleck and Kingsland for poultry ; and Messrs Meredith and Stirling for dairy produce, home-made bread, &c. Those gentlemen got through their duties in a business-like manner, the awards beiug given in ample time to allow the public to thoroughly criticise their decisions. The wheat o£ the district was represented by some excellent samples, that Ijrown by Mr W. Johnston, oEGroper's Bush, being placed in the pre:nier position. It was certainly a grand sample. Mr J. Mclntyre, of Rotlnemurchus, was awarded second honrs. Mr Fletcher was the only exhibitor of barley, and received an'honorary certificate for Ills sample. Mr R. Baird, of Limestone Plains, was to the fore with fine samples of short and sparrowbill oats, taking a first prize in each class. There were no entries for either long or potato oats. Mr A. Pyper, of Wrey's Bush, and Mr R. Baird took first and second prize respectively with nice samples of blue peas, the two samples of gray peas shown not being so much fancied. Mr F. Sutton was awarded an lion, cer. for his field tares, the only exhibit shown in this class The same exhibitor had the field to himself in Italian grass and received a first award, while Mr J. Mclntyre and W. Brown took and second respectively for ryegrass, and the latter took a first for cocksfoot. There were no exhibits in the timothy or tall fescue classes, but Mr F. Sutton showed a nice sample of nica'ow fescue, which receivad a first award. There was a splendid display of roots, and we never romeaiber hiving seen the " neops " better repr rented than they were on Wednesday. There were no less than 16 exhibits of field turnips, comprising Aberdeeu, yellow, purple top mammoth, green glob*?, white globe and other varieties, Mr James Henderson's lot of purple top yellows bsing awarded first place—rather a triumph to the grower, as showing what can bo produced on the Aparima terrace land. Of the seven exhibits of swedes, Mr J. B. McLean's was placed first. Mr J. Mclntyre took first for early potatoes, of which there were four exhibits. The eight samples of derwents gave the judges some difficulty to place, the quality of all being so good. The awards were given to Messrs G. Hamilton, Jas. Henderson aud J. Lindsay, in the order named. The first prize for any other variety of late potatoes was secured by Mr G. Stevens. Mr Mclntyre had no competition against his two lots of apples, which wero awarded a first and second. The was a numerous entry of butter. Of the 12 excellent samples shown in fresh butter Mrs W. Elliot's most pleased the fastidious taste of the judges ; Mrs A. Gilchrist being awarded second for a nice lot-—of this we can spoak aulkoratatively, as the droof was in the eating. The latter lady secured a first for her potted butter, and Miss •1. Younger a first for her salt butter. Groifc disappointment was expressed by the judges and others at the indifferent quality of the cheese, of which there were four exhibits. It was certainly not worthy of the district, and it is to be hoped our cheuseuiakers will have a better display at the next show. The exhibits of oat cake were all of so excellent a quality that they wero difficult to place. Mrs P. Fletcher received first honors in this class ; Miss J. Younger second, aud Mrs G. Hamilton third. Eight out of the eleven exhibits of scones were disqualified for being baked in the oven instead of on the griddle. Mrs Fletcher secm*ed the first prize. The " chieftain o' the puddin' race " was " wantin','' and many wore disappointed at not seeing his " honest, sousie face." The bulk of the prizes

in poultry classes wore annexed by Messrs Stewart aud Harper, Mr R. Clark and Mr A. M. Lindsay of Invercargill. In Laugshaus there was a errand display—no less than seven entries ; Plymouth Rocks being also well represented by four entries. Miss J. Younger secured the cup presented by Mr Levy, of Invercaro'iii, for highest aggregate prizetaker in dairy produce, etc., Samples of growing grass (giant Italian and meadow fescue) were shown by Mr F. Sutton for exhibition only, as were also samples of oatmeal and pearl barley by Mr M. Tweedie, of the Riverton mills, and Messrs Whittingham Bros, and Instone, of the Gummie's Bush mill. The latter firm also had on exhibition at their other store, a chondrometcr, an ingenious little implement which indicates the weight per bushel of any kind of grain. A quantity less than is contained in a small samplo bag is put into a brass measure on the machine, the indicator showing the exact weight per bushel of the grain. It should prove very handy to buyers and sellei-3 of grain. The following is the PRIZE-LlS'f : GRAIN. Best Sample Wheat—VY Johuston, 1 ; J Mclntvro, 2. Seven entries.
