VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT.

The second of Professor Burton's vocal anil instrumental concerts was given on Wednesday evening- in the Oddfellow's Hall. Owing 1 , no doubt, to the fact of the Grain Show taking place at Thorn bury the same day, the attendance was not so large as might he expected, considering the merits of the entertainment. We were pleased to see Mr Hale (a recent arrival at Invercargill) among the Orohcstr, and fell sure he will prove a welcome addition to the musical circle there. " The Cross of Honor " (Overture) by the Orchestra was well rendered, after which Mr Brown sang in his usual, much appreciated style, " Trusty as Steel.''' Miss Hogg contributed the next item, " White Wings," and was heartily applauded. The waltz, " Dora," Orchestra, was followed by " Call me Back," from Miss Little, whose sweet singing- in tlio " Patience " troupa visiting here a year or two ago, will still be remembered. "La Belle France " (cornet solo), by Mr Moore, was cleverly given. Mrs Neave's song, " The Children's Home," with violin, cello, piano and organ accompaniment, was, in our opinion, the gesm of the evening. "The Harmonious Blacksmith," part song, by Mr Burton's pupils, and a selection by the Orchestra concluded the first part. The opening item on the second part of the programme, a " A. Fantasia on Scotch Airs," was a treat to many present, the old familiar tunes awakeninghappy memories of long* ago. The "Professor's song, " The Yeoman's Wedding," was vociferously encored, bat as the programme was a lengthy one, he simply bowed his acknowledgements. Miss Little again delighted her audience with " It was a Dream." violin and piano accompaniment, after which Mr Ferguson gave a euphonium solo, " Jenny Jones," in his own masterly way. The next number, " Children's Voices." was set down for Miss A. Tall, but as that lady was unable to be present on account of a severe cold, Miss Achcson very kindly took her place, and did full justice to the pretty song; the refrain of which

should have been very effective was marred by a discord in the voices. " Maritaua (by request) was then given by the Orchestra, and, need we say, was much enjoyed, the various beautiful airs abounding in this favorite opera being brilliantly executed. Miss Hogg came next with a charming little song entitled " Lovolight," which she rendered very nicely, accompanied by violin, cello and piano. The march, " Flauiborough," and " Rule Britannia," Orchestra, brought a successful programme to a close. We think Professor Burton certainly deserves to be better patronised for his efforts to introduce high-class music, and trust that his next concert will be more liberally supported.
