AQUATIC NOTES.

Tho. sculling match in dingoya between Boniface and Palamountain, which is to b? rowed on the Aparima estuary on Tuosday next, is exciting a good deal of interest here, and promises to bo a close contest for tho stakes (£SO), but as Palamountain was beaten at Dunedin on Wodnosday by Davis, Bonny, if successful, will have to reckon with Davis before he can claim the championship of New Zealand. Tho latter oarsman must have greatly improved or Palamountain is out of condition, as ho was nowhere in tho Dunedin Exhibition race when he competed with Bonny, in the Time-handicap Dingey Race (2 miles) at tho Dunedin Exhibition Regatta last year. In this race there wore eight entrants, including Palamountain, who was planed at scratch. Boniface was given lOsec. and Davis, 36sec. Palam untain, however, did not start, and Boniface won easily, C. M. Kingston (355e0.) being second. At tho Dunediu regatta on Monday last, Palamountain (scratch), J. Hogan (30 sec), and McGrath (28 sec.) pulled in the Dingy Race. After the mile post had been turned, Hognn was leading, when McGrath's dingey swamped and went under. Hogan then stopped to assist McGrath, and the latter clung on to the stern of his boat until picked up by a whal«bo,;t. In tho meantime Palamountain, who had been about 200 yards or so in tho rear, made up on Hogan. The two surviving boats raced to a finish, and Palamountain won by several lengths. Time, 27min 37sec. Hogan was dissatisfied with the result, and asserted that ho could have beaten Palamountain had he not assisted McGrath. Palamountain offered to row the raco again for a stake of either £5 or £lO, but Hogan did not accept the challenge.

Tho sculling match for tho championship of Ofcago and £2O, between Messrs A. Palatnotintain and B. Davis, was rowed off at Dunedin harbor on Wednesday, and resulted in a victory for Davis. Tho match was to have been rowed off in connection with the regatta ou Monday, but owing to tho roughncss of the water was postponed. Tho course was throe miles in length, and lay between tho Victoria wharf, around the beacon off ltaveusbourne, and finishing between No. 1 red beacon and the wharf. Ai; 9 o'clock both men took up their positions, the bay being very smooth and at the word "go " both caught tho water at onoe. When a short distauco had boeu covered Palamountain had forged ahead about half a length, maintainiug this position until tho turning point was reached. Mere Davis made a very smart turn, and shot ahead of his opponent some two lengths. , o quickly increased this to three lengths, and nearer homo made the diiitanco still wider between tho two boats, thus winning somewhat easily.
