EASTER MONDAY'S RACES.

(Br ]>enzox.) j *■ ... .. . i

Given fino weather fcho above Club's annual meeting, which takes place on Monday, should

prove in every way an unqualified success. \ Largo fi 'lds are sure to start in overy race | barring the Cup and Maiden Steeplechase, and the committee have left nothing undonq in the way of providing for the comfort of fhoso attending. A capital course has been laid out for the two steeplechases and those occupying the grandstand (for a commodious cno has been erected) will see them from start to finish. A special train will loave Tnvercargill for Riverton at 9.45 a.m., running at reduced fares, viz., Is first class, and 2s Gd second, return; whilst late trains will leavo ilivorton for Invcrcargill, Oropukiand Nightcaps. With reforenco to the horses themsolves, it is a difficult matter to anticipate the winners in any of the events. For the Hurdle Eace there aro six contestants and May boy, with list up, should make id warm for the field, although that fast horse Max•,velton is lot in at the same weight. Patchwork, after his performance at Man/!ovillo on St. Patrick's Day, has been allotted lOst 71b which should not in any way hinder him from running'a good horsr. Of Volunteer and Jnno I know nothing:, so I will pass on to the Maiden Plate for which no less than a dozen horses aro entered. Most of thohorses engaged in this ovent are out for their first time and it is a hard matter to vonture to pick the winner, but with a good start! think the Adele—Orion filly Tangle should about win; but Prior, Merino and Hawthorne will bo w'ell supported. Four horses are in the Maiden Steeplechase and well ridden Tally-ho should win hamis down. Out of the six hofses onteredfortheCuponly three-Victory, May King and Hawthorne—have accepted. Victory has often proved himselE a good 'an with a weight, but on this oe&ision I will go for May King. The next race is the piece de vpsi stance of the meeting—the Hunt Club [ Steeplechase with eight horses left in it. J Tictor's past experience over natural country should prove of service of him, but 12st is a big weight and iu all probability will bo too much over three miles of country with about 19 jumps. It is not the first time Maxwelton has been over the same ground and on this oecasion he may run into a hotter position than last time. Patchwork ran Victor to a neck at Mandeville and on Monday will not disgrace his backers. lam inclined to plump for°Mayboy, but must say it is a very open lace. Old Ranger (last year's winner) and Waiau are by no moans novices over stiff countrv but they have had their day. Jerry is a. stranger down this way and I don't fancy his chance much. The Flying Handicap has nine acceptances and either Matamata, The Lad, Taffrail or Tangle should furnish the winuer.

Hunt Club Steeplechase—Victor, 1; Patchwork, 2 ; Mayboy, 3.
