RIVERTON-COLAC ROAD.

TO THE KDITOU, Sot, —Vs the poll in connection svitli tlio proposal to borrow a sum of money to carry ou tho ahovo work is to bo taken to-morrow, I b'*g with your permission t<> point out to tho ratepayers of the Palliamd divisions of tho Ovopuki Riding tho following reasons why the proposal should roooivo their support:—(l) Incises of sickness much delay and. inconvicnco will be saved in obtaining a doctor or medicine. (3) Great exoonso might often bo saved by taking a patient to tho doctor instead of bringing tho d ieter to tho pal lout, and this could readily be done in many cases, when tho train is not. available, were the road made suitable for wheel traffic, (a) Persons sending stock to market, are well aware of tho inconvenience of trucking cattle from Paihi for Thornbnry, whereas they might mere easily and cheaply lie driven and would arrive in hotter condition than if sent by rail. (I) The road would have the effect of increasing settlement in its vicinity and the value of property in tho locality would thereby bo greatly increased, The bulk of

the cost would thus eventually fall upon those wlio derive tho most immediate benefit from tlio expenditure. (5) It gosa almost without saying that traffic towards Oivpaki would be greatly increased and would load to more business being - doue in the place. (6) Every (■lfort is being made in another part of the G mnty to cause the read leading to the land to be opened for settlement a iros-s tho AVaiau to he made via Otauuui instead of by what should ho tho shortest and most convenient route, viz., Oi’opuki ; and it will bo a powerful argument in favor of the former if this work is not gone on with. (7) Tho ratepayers living at Bound Hill, Oolac and Oraki will natural I v vote in a block in favor of the proposal, and if tho object is defeated hy an a 1 verse vote at Oropuki, this end of the riding may at some future time expect retaliation should a similar ease, more nearly affecting Orapuki, come before the ratepayers. —T am, &j..
