[Press Association-.] Wellington, Friday. In the Post this evening Charles Stephenson, who recently defeated Joseph Kemp on the Parramatta River, challenges W, Hearn for £2OO a-side, and the sculling championship of New Zealand, the race to take place on any fair course agreed upon. Hearn holds the New' Zealand championship. His Excellency the Governor and his private secretary returned from Nelson to-day. With reference to the cablegram from London published that strikers had cabled to the Australian Unions asking them not to discharge vessels
which have been loaded by “ blacklegs, it may be mentioned that the Seamen’s Union here have received no notification to that eflect. There is a Lumpers Union in Wellington. The Tainui was to have sailed from London on the 7th inst., and therefore dus in the colony on the 20th: of October. Trades affiliated to the Trades and Labour Council have subscribed .£7O in aid of the strikers fund. Numerous lists have yet to be collected.
