ROUND HILL.

(feom oue own goheespondent.) The time that elapses between mr letters is unpardonable. I am not going to tell an untruth, and offer as an apology that there is no news from

this place. Ho ; it is better to tell the truth at owe, and admit that ‘your own” has been too lazy to report. The Christmas washing for this year does not come up to expectations, on account of the long spell or dry weather we have had some time back ; hut I don’t think we should grumble, as we had two or three weeks of good water to finish up with, and consequently got some of our lower races washed up. The population of Chinese is still •on the increase here. It is a difficult thing to state the exact number; but as near ns I can tell, there are about .'3OO on this field now.

As I informed you before, this is a most extensive goldfield for ground sluicing; izi fact, from Lake George to the Round Hill there is one continuous deposit of auriferous wash, and not one-fourth of the miners can he supplied with water at present. A great amount of driving is now going <on, principally by the Chinese, who in some ’claims are making splendid wages. The whole of (his ground will be worked over again when water can be obtained to sluice with. Only one seam 'df wash is now taken out, and there are four or five such scams, more or less payable in the depth from the surface, which depth varies from 30 to 70 feet. ’The most important news I have to con-Tfinnicate is Mr Berndtson’s ■application for a new water-race, which was grarited by the Warden at the last, court. This race will. be 20 miles in length, and bring in to this place 30 ‘Government heads ot water, which, means employment for about 200 men, in addition to the present population. I look upon this, spec as one that will ■materially benefit the district at large, and wish the enterprising proprietor ■every success; As I mean to be mote regular in ray 'Correspondence in future, I don’t wish to be too long-winded just now ; but; before concluding I wish you “AMerrv Christmas and a Happy Hew Tear.”
