MILLENIAL MONGERS.
TO TiTE nniTOR. Sir,— Tn perusing the remarks contained in your last week’s issue on the earthquake, I observed the unseemly expression, “ iMillenni.il imngers” used in reference to some persons who may have happened to be the objects of your contempt or oven your ire. Now, in offering a few remarks on Rio above, which I hope you°will insert in the Star, I shall not question your right I to insert, in the paper whatever you please, but | I do think that in view of your publishing your I paper tor the use of those whoso religious views may differ from your own, you should not havn wantonly applied offensive names cither to themselves or to their religious opinions. I do not doubt but that, the word monger can bo very properly applied to one who deals in ironware or fldi, I really cannot sfe how the word can be grammatically applied to myself in common with thousands of others, including the most intelligent and devout of several of the orthodox churches, because we teach the Lord Jesus will reign in Jerusalem for a thousand years or durum a Millenium. Now sir, if I were to retaliate and call you a Heaven Monger, or a Devil and Hell Fire Monger, because you believe these thiria-o would you not consider me very ill tempered P That the Bible contains a millennial theory cannot. be doubted. “ And ho laid hold of the dragon, the old serpent who is devil and satan, and he bound him a thousand years.” “And they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.” Rev. xx. chap., part of 2 and 4 verses. Tiiis is a part of ihc bible millennial teaching. If you deny it, your situation is atheistic. If you believe it, but do not understand it as others do, .(that is no reason why you should not respect rlioso who think it. worth their while to pay more attention to the subject than you are -in the habit, of doing.) Hoping that out of fair play you will insert tile Move. —I am, in all goo] temper, yours, &c. Wei. Eobekts[For obvious reasons, wo decline to enter iutoa religious discussion with Mr Roberts, and insert his letter only because he feels aggrieved by the expression “ Millennial Monger.” Wo disclaim j having us°d the word in any offensive sense, and assure our correspondent that in til ho published the fact, we were not aware that he hold any opinions whatever on the merits of “ Millennial. Mongers” or (to use his own elegant expession) “ Devil-,an 1-Hull-(ire-Mongers,” amongst the disciples of the letter of whom he kindly places us.—Ed. W. S.]
