A NUT FOR MR DANIEL TO CRACK.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir —I was rather amused at a loiter which appeared in the Southland News of last week signed Thco. Daniel. The letter would appear to our distant readers of no little import, especially to Erovineialists : in fact, the News made a leader from it about Maori kings and Waitangi treaties. Mr D. once tried the Waitangi treaty business here amongst his coloured constituents, but it would not wash, but the'object of my letter is to ask Mr Daniel how lie can have the assurance to tell us that the Provincial Government is in a flourishing position, and that it could take over the liabilities of the whole of the Middle Island, when they cannot pay the contractor for building the immigrant cottages at the Otautau, the valuation for land taken by the Western swindle works ; in fact, the general cry is, if you ask the Grovernment for funds, they have hone available. Hence the proposed Land Sale. Let him look at the state of Riverton to-day and all from Px-ovin-cialism. Nothing but idle men walking about; some of them who have been working are waiting for the Great Railway Boss to return to be paid 5 others waiting for work when the railway starts. But, I trust, if they ever start again,, it will be under better management than the Otago Provincial Government. So. in future, Mr D. when you give us nuts to crack let them be sound, and not the rotten stuff you try to pass off upon us— I am, &0., Centralist. Riverton, May 19.
