SECOND EDITION ONGA ONGA SPORTS

NEW YEAR’S DAY ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME To the Onga Onga Sports Cluh ' each year belongs the honour of starting the athletic season in : Hawke’s Bay, except for club and inter-club meetings. The Onga Onga meeting is one of the oldest athletic fixtures in the province, and has always been one of the best. Time was when the horse events included gallops. and in days gone by, some of New Zealand’s best horse made their first appearance at Onga Onga. Among these may be mentioned Captain Sharman, which won the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton, and with Star Rose (the New Zealand Cup winner) paid a record double dividend. However, much as the old-timers enthuse over the sports meetings of the past ft is safe to say there is a much greater variety of attractions provided for patrons to-day, than ever before. A programme of over 50 events, and in many of which heats are likely to be run, is certainly one of which any club may be proud, and the opening of the New Year 1936 should see a record crowd gracing the fine sports ground which the Onga Onga Sports Club is fortunate enough to possess. There are four cycling events, 2, 4 6 and 8 laps respectively. The athletic events include 100, 220, 440, 880 yards and one mile running handicaps, one mile walking race (in which the Australian and New Zealand champion, lan Driscoll, is likely to appear), three women’s races, 75, 100 and 120 yards, mixed relay race (one man and two women in team), and pole vaulting competition. In the last-mentioned event the New South Wales champion, Ted Winter (“The Grasshopper”), is likely to be seen in action. There are also nine children’s races, five sawing and chopping events for valuable prizes, twelve dancing events, eight horse events, and several novelty events.

Added to all of these aeroplane flights and aerobatic displays will be conducted by the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast Aero Club. A dance will be held in the Onga Onga Town Hall, in the evening-, commencing at 8.30 o’clock. Te Tari’s “Aces” orchestra will provide the music.
