Variety of Oaths

The customary recited oath was varied in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court recently when -Too Sun, a witness in a Chinese civil claim, bound himself to tell the truth hy blowing out a lighted match. The interpreter said later th ait there wore scores of Chinese oaths, the more common of which were to blow out a lighted match, to walk outside and look at the sky, and to break'a saucer. Four years ago a different one was almost introduced at Auckland. A Chinese witness insisted that the only oath binding upon him was to cut off a cockerel’s head above a grave. The court was on the point of adjourning to the cemetery to administer the oath when it was announced that the cjn.se had been settled. Goose Did Much Damage. A goose recently cut off Marton's supply of electricity for over two hours, caused a serious interruption to the power supply, and was responsible for 4 2 street lamps being burnt out. The goose flew into the 11,000volt line and short-circuited all three of the 11,000-volt lines. The resulting fault current arced over the fuse carriers and continued up to the main 11000-volt feeders, one of which was so severely damaged that the line broke and fell on to the P. and T. lines below. A number of telephone lines were broken and telephone fuses blown. The falling 11,000-volt line came in contact with a street lighting wire, and the street lamps burnt out.
