Council’s Monthly Meeting

HELD LAST EVENING GENERAL MATTERS DISCUSSED The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. I. W. N. Mackie) presiding over the following ' members: Crs. H. A. Martin (deputy-Mayor), R. W. Carpenter, JL. Brathwaite, J. McCarthy, J. C. Windle and G. J. Bromell. The clerkengineer (Mr. H. B. Smart) was in attendance. Hospital Levy.

The Waipawa Hospital Board advised that the levy on the borough for the year 1935-36 would be £337 13/6. The Town Clerk said that the amount was £l9 3/1 more than had been estimated for. It was decided to ask for an explanation of the increase. Governor’s Visit. The Military Secretary to the Gov-ernor-General wrote expressing Lord and Lady Galway's appreciation of the ararngements made in connection wit htheir recent visit to Wainukurau.—Received. Heavy Traffic Fees. The Transport Department wrote advising the basis on which the Minister would allocate heavy traffic fees if the local bodies concerned failed to agree among themselves. The clerk said that in Hawke’s Bay the a r < ngeinent had been that the boroughs received one-third of the fees ana the counties and town districts, two-thirds. The boroughs then divided their sum according io their respective capital valuations. A councillor remarked that on one occa ■ ; m the counties had failed co agree on the basis of allocation, but had hesitated to go to the Minister because tney thought that the boroughs might then get a larger share. T..e lec:< r was received. Use of Russell Park. The Old Boys’ Cricket Club applied for the use of Russell Park for cricket matches during the coming season.

The request was granted. Cr. McCarthy pointed out that there might be other cricket clubs in the town, and that the Old Boys’ Club could not, of course, be given the exclusive right to the use of the park. The Mayor said that this was not intended and that any club would be able to use the park. ' Queen Carnival. The honorary secretary of the Waipukurau Swimming Baths Association wrote pointing out that the Municipal Theatre would be required for a number of functions in connection with the Queen Carnival to raise funds for the construction of swimming baths in Waipukurau, and asking that a reduction in rental should be granted on all these occasions. The Mayor said that the council had no power to make a reduction. On his motion it was decided to reply to this effect, adding that the council would consider individual applications for donations. Theatre Shop. H. B. Poppelwell and Co., Ltd., Hastings, wrote offering to lease a theatre shop at 35/- per week for 12 months, with the right of renewal at the same price for a further three years. The offer -was conditional on certain improvements being carried out.

Miss A. Morris wrote offering to lease a theatre shop for a year or more if necessary at 36/- weekly. She offered to pay a little more if certain improvements were carried out. The clerk pointed out that the council was already virtually .committed to Messrs. E. B. Poppelwell and Co., and it was decided to accept their offer. The tender of Messrs. John Winlove and Sons (£l7 10/-) for the required improvements was accepted. It was decided to advise Miss Morris that the council, prior to the receipt of her letter, had made arrangements for the lease of the shop. Tree Planting. The honorary secretary of the Women’s Institute wrote stating

that the Institute was planting trees in various towns throughout New Zealand, and asking for permission to carry out work on these lines in Waipukurau. It was decided to give permission, subject to the council approving the class and position of the trees. The matter was left in the hands of Crs. Martin and Bromell and the engineer. Health Stamps. The honorary organiser of the Health Stamp Campaign wrote asking for permision to hold a street collection on October 4. —Permission was granted. Lending Library. A recommendation from a meeting of library subscribers urged the council to consider making an additional grant for the purchase of books and also increasing the librarian's salary. On the motion of Cr. Carpenter, seconded by Cr. Bromell, it was decided to hold these matters over till toward the end of the year. The Mayor reported that it was considered desirable to close the libraty for cataloguing and stocktaking, and the library committee requested that the council should make assistance available to the librarian while the work was being done. It was decided to grant £5 for this purpose. Sexton Appointed. Mr. W. Giddens was appointed sexton.
